Wofford Runs Unbeaten Streak to Eight Matches

Clinton, S.C.- Matching up against former Wofford men's soccer assistant coach Nick Finotti's Presbyterian Blue Hose, the Wofford men's soccer team shut out the Blue Hose 2-0 to remain unbeaten since August 28, 2023.

After enduring an early wave of offense from Presbyterian, Wofford countered with the opening score of the match. At the 10:55 mark, sophomore Jakob Andersson crossed the ball into sophomore Nikolai Rojel, fresh off being named Southern Conference Offensive Player of the Week, for a shot that was blocked by the Presbyterian keeper and deflected back to the feet of Rojel who then tallied high eighth goal of the season and a 1-0 lead.

Wofford maintained control of the ball for the next ten minutes of the match and threatened to expand their lead but were unable to do so and left themselves open to a Presbyterian counter. In the 22nd minute the Blue Hose had their opportunity to pull even, only to be denied by senior goalkeeper Cameron Victor.

The Terriers then punished the Blue Hose for not equalizing the match by finding a second goal in the 41st minute. Sophomore Zakaria Holmen flipped a pass into the box for junior Nic Parker who put a move on his defender and fired off the shot past the keeper and took the 2-0 lead into the half. Parker's goal was his first of the season and the first this season by a Terrier born on the mainland United States.

Wofford's defense continued to frustrate the Blue Hose attack throughout the second half save for two occasions. In the 64th minute Victor was called upon to make a save, which he made by deflecting the ball out for a Presbyterian corner and all the Blue Hose managed from the set piece was a harmless ball well high of the goal. Then again in the 81st minute Presbyterian managed to find an open space to shoot only for Victor to climb the ladder and preserve the shutout and the 2-0 win.

With now four clean sheets in his last five matches, Cameron Victor has tied former Wofford goalkeeper Garrett Closs for fifth in shutouts in a season since moving to division one in 1995. Victor has also now strung together consecutive shutouts twice this season, a feat he was not able to accomplish even once last season.

Tonight's result brings the Terriers' record to 3-0-5 since the loss to Charlotte on August 28, 2023- tying the longest unbeaten stretch in Wofford's division one era (9/1/2009-10/3/2009) and the second longest in program history (Wofford won eleven straight matches in 1994).

Wofford is back in Southern Conference action on Saturday, October 7, hosting the Mercer Bears at 7 PM. A win for the Terriers would be their first triumph over the Bears since doing so at Snyder Field in 2019. The match will be streamed on ESPN+.
