Wofford Blanks Mercer for First SoCon Win

Spartanburg, S.C.- Wofford Men's soccer put in another 90 minutes of shut out soccer and walked off the pitch with a 2-0 win over the Mercer Bears.

Scoring opened for the Terriers in the 20th minute when sophomore Jakob Andersson played a ball into senior Thaddeus Dennis who took advantage of the open space given to him to dribble just outside the box before rifling a shot past Mercer goalkeeper
Trevor McMullen for a 1-0 Wofford lead that would hold into halftime thanks in large part to the Terrier defense.

Mercer's offense, which led the Southern Conference in goal differential and scoring offense, failed to register a shot on goal in the first half and could only muster one shot that missed wide to the left.

The Bears rectified their first half showing by immediately pressuring senior goalkeeper Cameron Victor in the first five minutes of the second half. Mercer's Carlos Santamaria corralled the Wofford attempt to clear the ball from danger and took advantage of the rare opportunity to shoot, albeit right at Victor who deflected the shot right to Mercer's Kadeem Agard for a header attempt that bounced straight back to Victor who ultimately kept the Bears off the board.

Wofford punished the Bears for not converting the scoring opportunity first by not allowing another shot on goal for the rest of the match, and then secondly by finding a second goal that all but clinched the match for the Terriers.
In the 79th minute, sophomore Zakaria Holmen earned Wofford its sixth corner opportunity of the night. Jakob Andersson swung a ball in for the Terriers that only senior Bryce Peacock could get to, and the senior put the ball in the top right corner of the net for his first goal of the season and the backbreaker for the Bears.

With tonight's result, the team has now kept the most clean sheets in a season since the 2014 and tied the 2013 team for the second most in the D-I era and the third most in program history. Cameron Victor also moved up to a fourth-place tie with former Wofford keeper Andrew Drennan in single season shutouts.

Wofford will take their D-I era best nine match unbeaten streak to Wake Forest on Tuesday, October 10 for a match with the Demon Deacons and then return to SoCon play on Saturday, October 14, for a matchup with the UNCG Spartans.
