Volleyball Sweeps UNCG in Friday Home Contest

Terriers use 11 blocks to secure third-straight victory

SPARTANBURG, S.C. – The Wofford volleyball team pushed its winning streak to three matches Friday night with a straight-set triumph over the UNCG Spartans (25-22, 25-15, 25-16) inside the Jerry Richardson Indoor Stadium. Wofford improves to 18-7 (9-5 SoCon) while UNCG drops to 1-23 (0-13 SoCon).

The straight-set victory is Wofford's 10th sweep of the season, and it secures a season-series sweep over the Spartans for the Terriers' sixth-straight match won over UNCG. At 18 wins, Wofford has topped its total from last season and posted its highest win total since 22 victories in 2017. With nine SoCon wins, the Terriers are one shy of matching the program's record for conference wins in a season.

The Spartans would hold a slight edge at the service line with six aces to Wofford's five, but the Terriers led the way everywhere else. Notably, Wofford found its biggest advantage at the net with 11 blocks to only the four of UNCG. While hitting at .264 in the match, the Terriers held the Spartans to an .053 mark with 20 attack errors.

The block efforts were paced by Millie Loehr with six total, including a career-high four solo blocks. Loehr now owns 74 career solo blocks, moving her into sixth place on Wofford's career leaderboard. Sarah Barham added four blocks alongside a pair from Mary Emily Morgan.

Barham also paced the offense with nine kills. Natalie Arnold added seven, and Sarah MacLean was perfect on the night with six kills on six swings. Arnold owned the team's best hitting percentage of attackers with 10-plus attempts with a .385 clip on 13 swings and only two errors.

Pacing the offense was the setting tandem of Taylor Pecht and Emily Hodsdon, who dished 17 and 12 assists, respectively. Hodsdon added an ace as did Abbey Richman. Laney Klika recorded a pair to top the squad. Freshman Emily Normand also sent home an ace, the first of her career.

Morgan topped the digging efforts with 10, and Klika notched six of her own. Three others (Bri Mahoney, Hodsdon and Pecht) secured exactly five to mark five Terriers with five-plus digs on the night.

Wofford came out of the gates strong with a 9-3 lead early in the first set. But UNCG chipped away to pull within a point at 17-16. However, a pair of Wofford points, capped by a Bri Mahoney kill, gave the Terriers some more breathing room. But the Spartans went on a four-point run to pull ahead 20-19. The teams traded some points until, tied at 21, a Sarah Barham block swung the pendulum back in Wofford's favor. An Emily Hodsdon kill followed, and Abbey Richman delivered an ace for set point. Despite a Spartan kill, Barham secured another block to ice the set for the Terriers.

That momentum carried Wofford to a 9-1 advantage in set two. Sarah Barham featured heavily in the run with a pair of kills and a block in conjunction with Natalie Arnold, who also added a kill. The Spartans put forth efforts to try to come back, including a three-point swing in the middle portions of the set, but the early hole proved too much to climb out of. Laney Klika created set point with an ace, and Millie Loehr ended the frame with a denial for the 25-15 set two win.

Set three started closer with Wofford ahead 10-6 before a Terrier three-point run created some separation. The Spartans pulled within 16-10 before Wofford hit another groove with a four-point run to reach 20 points. Sarah MacLean delivered a kill, Laney Klika added an ace and the Spartans committed a pair of errors for the 20-10 Terrier advantage. Late in the set, Natalie Arnold put home a kill, and Emily Normand delivered her first-career ace in a big moment for match point. However, the Spartans refused to quit just yet and won the next three points. But Arnold decided enough was enough and put down the match-clinching kill to secure the Terrier sweep.

Wofford remains home next weekend for the final two matches of the regular season. The Terriers host Western Carolina on Friday, November 10 at 6:00 p.m. before welcoming ETSU to town the following night. The regular-season finale against the Bucs is also Senior Night for the Terriers and is slated to start at 7:00 p.m.
