THE CITADEL GAME
Wofford will play the final road game of the season on Saturday at The Citadel ... The game features two teams searching for their first win of the season ... The Terriers are coming off an opening weekend 45-7 loss at Pittsburgh, a 23-6 loss to #4 William & Mary,  a 23-20 home loss to Presbyterian, a 17-14 loss at VMI,  a 23-13 loss to #22 Chattanooga, a 31-10 loss to Samford, a 41-10 loss at ETSU,  a 31-17 road loss at Mercer and a 28-25 loss to #16 Western Carolina to move to 0-9 overall and 0-6 in the SoCon ... The Citadel is 0-9 overall and 0-6 in the Southern Conference, which included a home loss last weekend to Mercer by a 38-16 margin ... This will be the 77th meeting between the two teams in a series that dates back to 1916 ... Last season Wofford earned a 31-16 win in Spartanburg and the Terriers have won six of the last ten games ... The Bulldogs are 117th in the nation in total offense (250.8) and 113th in total defense (457.2).

TERRIER TOP NOTES
Here are the top notes of interest heading into the game against The Citadel ...
    • The Terriers are 0-9 to begin the season. The previous fewest wins to start a season was 0-8 in 1946.
    • Wofford opened with three of the first four games on the road for the second straight season.
    • The Wofford defense has seven interceptions this season - fourth in the SoCon - two more than last season.
    • Shawn Watson was named head coach on December 1, 2022 after the Terriers posted a 3-3 record with Watson as interim head coach.
    • Wofford returns 14 starters overall, including five on offense, seven on defense and two specialists.  
    • Two players were named to the All-Southern Conference preseason second team - DL Chuck Smith and OL Jason Swann.    
    • In the national rankings, the Terriers are 78th in total defense (386.1) and 116th in total offense (253.9) this season.

ABOUT WOFFORD
In the first full season under head coach Shawn Watson, the Terriers continue to search for their first win of the year. On offense, the offensive line has seen eight different players start games. Center Anthony Garcia the lone player to play all nine games at the same position. The pro spread offense usually sees three receivers, one tight end and one running back in most formations. Alec Holt leads the receivers with 20 catches and a touchdown, followed by Rickie Shaw with 11 catches and David Legette and Kyle Pinnix with ten each. Jordan Davis has seven catches for 98 yards and a touchdown to lead the tight ends. Ryan Ingram has 112 carries for 590 yards and five touchdowns at running back, while J.T Smith has 47 carries for 198 yards. Bryce Corriston has started four games at quarterback and is 37-of-66 for 366 yards and two touchdowns. Pauly Seeley has started the other five contests and is 84-of-154 for 864 yards.
    The defense remains a 3-4 base, with the defensive line led by usual starters C.J. Tillman, Brandon Maina and Chuck Smith. Maina leads the team with 4.0 sacks and eight quarterback hurries. The linebackers feature David Powers, who has a team-high 84 tackles, along with Eli Purcell with 53 tackles and a team-best 5.5 tackles for loss. In the secondary, John Michael DiRoberto is second on the team with 56 tackles, Damien Curtis has three interceptions and Maximus Pulley has two, with Amir Annoor leading the team with seven pass break-ups.
    Bridger Jones handles placekicking and is 10-of-12 on field goals, along with a 62.3 average on kickoffs. Atkins Roberts (39.9 yards per punt) and Devery Cagle handle punting, with Tommy DiLiegro and Blake Shirley sharing long snapping duties.

A CHANGE AT THE TOP
Shawn Watson, the Terriers assistant head coach and offensive coordinator, served as interim head coach beginning on Thursday, October 6, 2022. Watson has over 35 years of coaching experience, including a stint as head coach at Southern Illinois (1994-96). It marked the first time in school history that the football team has had an interim head coach. Watson was announced as the permanent head coach on December 1, 2022.

HITTING THE ROAD EARLY
Wofford was on the road for three of the first four games of the season, which were also the three longest road trips in 2023. These round trips totaled 2,444 miles with Pittsburgh (1026), William & Mary (808), and  VMI (610). The remaining three road trips are just 1,094 miles total to ETSU (254), Mercer (436)and The Citadel (404).

IN THE NATIONAL RANKINGS
Among the NCAA FCS leaders, Bridger Jones is 30th in field goal percentage (76.9%) and 31st in field goals per game ... Damien Curtis is ranked 17th in interceptions per game (0.4) ... Atkins Roberts is 42nd in punting with a 39.9 average ... Ryan Ingram is 45th in yards per carry (5.27) and 43rd in rushing yards per game (73.8) ... David Powers is 22nd in the nation in total tackles (9.3 per game).
