SPARTANBURG, S.C. – The Wofford College men's tennis team was defeated 5-2 by Gardner-Webb on Monday afternoon at the Reeves Tennis Center. The Runnin' Bulldogs took the hard-fought doubles point and then won four of the six singles matches.
During doubles play, the Runnin' Bulldogs took the #2 position by a 7-5 score. At #3 doubles,
Ashe Ray and
Robbie Young were down 0-3 and then 3-5, but rallied to take the match 7-5. In the deciding match at #1 doubles,
Callum Rendle and
Max Graham had a 5-4 advantage before Gardner-Webb came back for the 7-5 victory to earn the doubles point.
Alex Horn got things started for Wofford in singles with a 6-1, 6-3 win at the #5 position. After that victory tied the match, the Runnin' Bulldogs had four straight singles wins at the #4, #2, #1 and #6 positions to clinch the match. At #3 singles,
Robbie Young won the first set 6-1 and the second set was tied at 6-6 before Young earned a 7-4 win in the tiebreaker to win the match.
"Gardner-Webb has a good team," said head coach
Rod Ray. "I was impressed with the grit they owned today. We're going to respond well and be stronger from today's match."
Wofford (2-4) will host Mars Hill on Saturday, February 18 at 11:00 a.m. and follow with a home match against UAB on Sunday.
