SPARTANBURG, S.C. – The Wofford College men's tennis team was defeated 7-0 by UAB on Sunday afternoon at the Reeves Tennis Center. The Blazers won the doubles point and then swept all six singles matches.
All three doubles matches were closely contested.
Callum Rendle and
Max Graham were defeated 6-4 at the #1 position. At #3 doubles,
Ashe Ray and
Robbie Young were down 0-3 before tying the match at 3-3. It was tied at 4-4, 5-5 and 6-6. In the tiebreaker, the Blazers prevailed 7-3 to win the doubles point. The #2 doubles team of
Ian Rasheed and
Will Fullett had a 5-3 lead, but UAB rallied and were able to tie the match at 6-6. The tiebreaker was unfinished.
In singles play, the Blazers won the first set at all six positions. They claimed the match victory with straight set wins at the #1, #2, #6 and #5 positions. At #4 singles,
Will Fullett dropped the first set 3-6, but rebounded with a 7-5 win in the second set. The third set tiebreaker was won by UAB by a 13-11 score.
Robbie Young lost his first set at #3 singles 6-7 in a tiebreaker. He then won the second set 7-6 in a tiebreaker as well. In the third set tiebreaker, the score was tied at 7-7 when the Blazers scored the final three points for the 10-7 win.
"We got beat by a darn good team," said head coach
Rod Ray. "Although we weren't good enough today, we're improving each week. We competed hard in singles after losing a super close doubles point. I'm certain we'll continue to improve."
Wofford (3-5) will host a doubleheader on Tuesday, February 21 with the women's team against North Greenville at 2:30 p.m. UAB improves to 6-2 on the season.
