ASHEVILLE, N.C. – The Wofford College men's tennis team was defeated 4-3 on Thursday afternoon by UNC Asheville at the Asheville Racquet Club. The Terriers won two of the three doubles matches, but could only come up with two wins in singles.
The doubles action saw the Bulldogs taking the #1 position by a 6-1 score. At #2 doubles,
Ian Rasheed and
Will Fullett earned a 6-2 win, while the #3 pairing of
Robbie Young and
Ashe Ray came up with a 6-1 win as the Terriers secured the doubles point.
In singles, the Bulldogs picked up straight set wins at the #1, #2 and #3 positions. At the #4 position,
Will Fullett won the first set 7-6 in a tiebreaker and swept the second set 6-0 for the win.
Alex Horn dropped the first set at the #5 position, but rallied for a 7-5 win in the second and then took the third set 10-4 in a tiebreaker. The Bulldogs also had a win at the #6 position.
"Winning the doubles point on the road against a strong team is a positive," said head coach
Rod Ray. "However, we didn't shut the door in singles which is disappointing, but we're improving in many areas. I'm proud of the fight we showed today."
Wofford (4-6) will remain on the road with the next match on March 5 at Elon.
