SPARTANBURG, S.C. – The Wofford College men's tennis team won their first home match of the season by a 7-0 sweep over Young Harris at the Reeves Tennis Center. The Terriers won the doubles point and added wins in all six singles matches to win on Wednesday afternoon.
"We played a good team today," said head coach
Rod Ray. "I'm proud of our team because we played with courage when it mattered the most. There was a good Wofford crowd and we enjoyed having an energetic fan base. It was good to be home."
For the doubles point, the #2 team of
Will Fullett and
Ian Rasheed won their match 6-2. At #3 doubles,
Ashe Ray and
Robbie Young took an early 3-0 lead and won 6-2 to clinch the point. The #1 doubles match with
Callum Rendle and
Max Graham saw the Terriers down 3-0 before tying the match at 4-4 when it was left unfinished.
During singles play,
Alex Horn picked up the first win with a 6-3, 6-1 victory at the #5 position.
Will Fullett followed with a 6-4, 6-2 win to take the #4 position. At #2 singles,
Callum Rendle won the first set 7-6 (7-3) and then took the win with a 6-0 second set which clinched the match for the Terriers.
At #1 singles,
Ashe Ray won the first set 6-4 before dropping the second set 6-4. He took a 4-0 lead in the third set before closing it out at 6-1.
Max Graham lost his first set at #6 singles 7-5, but rallied for a 6-3 win in the second set and then won a hard-fought third set 6-3. In the #3 singles match,
Robbie Young lost the first set 6-4 and then won the second set 6-4. Since the match had been clinched by the Terriers, they played a third set tiebreak which was won 10-8 by Young.
Wofford will host Mars Hill and Emmanuel on Saturday, February 11, as part of a doubleheader with the women's team.
