SPARTANBURG, S.C. – Down 3-1, the Wofford women's tennis team rallied to tie the match at 3-3 before falling by a 4-3 final score to Chattanooga at the Reeves Tennis Center. The Mocs won two of the three doubles matches and then the teams split the six singles matches on Sunday afternoon.
Chattanooga opened doubles play with a 6-0 win at the #2 position. Wofford answered with a 6-4 win by
Emely Kahrs and
Brianna Wilbur at the #3 position. At #1 doubles,
Georgia Fischer and
Lily Woods were down 3-4 but won the next two games to take a 5-4 lead. The Mocs won the next two for a 6-5 lead and then won the last game for a 7-5 win which secured the doubles point.
In singles play, each team won the first set in three matches.
Brianna Wilbur earned a 6-1, 6-0 win at the #3 singles position for Wofford. The Mocs then picked up wins at the #1 and #4 singles positions to take a 3-1 lead in the match.
The remaining three matches went to three sets each. At #2 singles,
Breda Brennan lost the first set 6-3, but responded to win the second and third sets at 6-1 each for the victory.
Catherine Blouin won the first set in her match at #6 singles 6-0, but then dropped the second set 4-6. In the third set, she won 6-2 to tie the overall match at 3-3.
In the final match to be decided at #5 singles,
Emely Kahrs won the first set 6-4 and lost the second set 7-5. In the third set, Kahrs fell behind early 0-3, but was able to tie it at 5-5 after breaking serve. The Mocs then broke serve for a 6-5 lead and then held serve for the 7-5 win that gave Chattanooga the match victory.
The Terriers (10-7, 1-2) remain at home and host Furman on Wednesday, March 29, at 3:30 p.m. Chattanooga is now 12-5 overall and 1-2 in league play.
