Men’s Tennis Comes Up Short In Match To Mercer

SPARTANBURG, S.C. – On Tuesday afternoon the Wofford men's tennis team played a highly competitive match against Mercer, with the Bears coming away with a 4-3 win at Reeves Tennis Center. The Terriers won the doubles point by virtue of a tiebreaker at the #2 position. In singles, Mercer would win four of the six matches to secure the victory.
 
In doubles, Will Fullett and Ian Rasheed had a 5-2 lead at the #1 position and went on to claim a 6-4 victory. At #3 doubles, the Bears took a 5-3 advantage but the Terrier team of Ashe Ray and Max Graham battled back to make it 6-5 before Mercer won 7-5 to tie the point at 1-1.
 
At #2 doubles, Alex Horn and Robbie Young jumped out to a 5-2 lead before Mercer won two straight games for a 5-4 score. After taking a 6-5 lead, the Bears were able to make it 6-6 to send it to a tiebreaker. In the tiebreaker, Wofford was able to earn a 10-8 win which secured the doubles point.
 
Singles play began with Ian Rasheed picking up a 6-2, 6-3 win at the #6 position. Mercer then claimed straight set wins at the #5 and #3 positions to tie the match at 2-2.
 
The remaining three matches went three sets. At #2 singles, Robbie Young dropped the first set 6-1 before answering with a 6-3 win. In the third set, the Bears earned a 6-1 win. Ashe Ray lost the first set of his match at #1 singles and then rallied with 6-3, 6-1 wins in the next two sets for the win which tied the match at 3-3. In the final match to conclude, Alex Horn won the first set 6-2 at #4 singles and had a 4-1 lead in the second set before falling 7-5. In the third set, Horn trailed 3-0 early and came back to make it 4-3 before the Bears came away with a 6-3 win that clinched the match.
 
Wofford (5-14, 1-5) will host Furman on Friday, April 14, in the final regular season match of the season. The Bears are now 10-11 overall and 4-1 in league play. It was the second SoCon match of the season that the Terriers lost by a 4-3 margin.
