CHATTANOOGA, Tenn. – Facing the top team in the league, the Wofford men's tennis team saw three singles matches go to three sets before falling to Chattanooga at the UTC Tennis Center. The Mocs picked up the doubles point and then won five of the six singles matches for the 6-1 win on Sunday afternoon.
Wofford began doubles with a 6-1 win by
Alex Horn and
Robbie Young at the #2 position. Chattanooga had a 6-3 win at #1 doubles, which was followed by a 6-2 win at the #3 position to claim the doubles point.
In singles play, the Mocs won the first set in five of the six matches. In the sixth match,
Ian Rasheed picked up a 6-4, 6-2 win for the Terriers at the #6 position. Chattanooga had straight-set wins at #3 and #5 singles to take a 3-1 lead in the match.
The other three matches went to three sets. At #4 singles,
Alex Horn dropped the first set but answered with a 6-1 win in the second set. The third set was won 7-6 in a tiebreaker (7-5) to secure the match win for the Mocs.
Robbie Young lost the first set at #2 singles and then won the second set 6-2, but was defeated 6-3 in the third set. At #1 singles,
Ashe Ray was defeated
7-5 in the first set before winning the second set 6-4. In the third set, the Mocs came up with a 6-3 win to close out the match.
Wofford (5-13, 1-4) will return home for the final two matches of the regular season, beginning on Saturday, April 8, against Mercer. The Mocs are now 15-4 overall and 5-0 in SoCon play to hold first place.
