CHATTANOOGA, Tenn. – With the Southern Conference quarterfinals match against Samford tied at 3-3, the Wofford women's tennis team saw
Breda Brennan win a third-set tiebreaker by a 7-0 score to secure a 4-3 victory on Thursday. The Terriers earned the doubles point and the two teams split the six singles matches, giving Wofford the victory.
Wofford, the number six seed, was the only lower-seeded team to advance out of the quarterfinals of the tournament on Thursday at the Champions Club with the win over the #3 seeded Bulldogs.
To open the match, Wofford's double pair of
Emely Kahrs and
Brianna Wilbur had a 6-3 win at the #3 position. A 6-2 win by
Breda Brennan and
Catherine Blouin at the #2 doubles position clinched the doubles point for the Terriers. In the #1 position that was unfinished,
Georgia Fischer and
Lily Woods held a 5-2 lead.
In singles play, the Bulldogs had a straight-set win at the #5 position to tie the match at 1-1. Wofford was able to take a lead as
Brianna Wilbur earned a 6-3, 6-2 win at the #3 position and
Catherine Blouin added a 6-2, 6-1 victory at the #6 position. At #4 singles,
Georgia Fischer lost the first set 7-5 and was tied at 5-5 in the second set before falling 7-5.
With Wofford holding a 3-2 lead, the match would be decided in the final two singles pairings that each went to three sets.
Lily Woods lost her first set 6-4 playing the #1 position, but then won the second set 6-4. In the third set, the Bulldogs won 6-2 which tied the match at 3-3.
At #2 singles,
Breda Brennan won the first set 6-3 before dropping the second set 6-4. In the third set, it was tied at 3-all, 4-all and 5-all. Down 6-5 and facing quadruple match point in the third set, Brennan rattled off 12 straight points to rally for the thrilling 6-3, 4-6, 7-6 (7-0) win, ending the four-hour match.
"Winning the doubles point was such a great start for our team today," said head coach
Krissy Hall. "The team fought and overcame all types of adversity today, managing to pull through for the win. I couldn't be prouder of this team."
The Terriers (12-10) advance to the semifinals for the first time since the 2021 season. They will face #2 seed East Tennessee State at 2:00 p.m. on Friday. Samford ends the season at 12-8 overall.
