Head Coach Elissa Post Notches First Win as Wofford Defeats USC Upstate 2-1

Spartanburg, S.C.- After struggling to find their offensive rhythm in the previous game, Wofford women's soccer found the right chemistry in a 2-1 win over in-town rival USC Upstate on Thursday, August 24. In earning win number one of her head coaching career, Head Coach Elissa Post joined all of her predecessors in winning their first game at Snyder Field.

The offense put pressure on the Spartan defense early in the game registering three shots on goal in the first 25 minutes and it was Junior Megan Childress who finally put one past the reigning Big South Goalkeeper of the Year for her first goal of the season, the team's first foal of the season and gave the Terriers their first lead of the season at 1-0.

A set piece for USC Upstate netted the Spartans their first goal after the attempted corner ricocheted to Paige Armstrong who scored the equalizer and leveled the match at one goal each in the 34th minute. Sophomore Sydney Soehn nearly answered immediately for the Terriers at the 34:40 mark but missed left on her shot from inside the box and was the last attempt either team would see in the first half and so it went to the intermission 1-1.

Wofford came out in the second half and turned consecutive offside calls against the Spartans into the go-ahead goal. Senior Haley McCaffrey lined up a corner kick just before the 55-minute mark and, similar to the Upstate goal, the ball ricocheted to Senior Addie Marlett who let it rip into the top left of the net for the 2-1 lead and her first goal wearing a Wofford jersey.

The Spartan counterattack could only put one shot on goal for the remainder of the game, but it was saved by Sophomore Rylee Godbold for her team leading fourth save. The Wofford defense however was able to bait the USC Upstate offense into ending the attack early by drawing them into four offside calls after scoring the go-ahead goal and tallied nine offside calls against the Spartans in the game.

Up next for Wofford will be the other side of a two-match home stand and will take on the Davidson Wildcats on Sunday, August 27, at 1 PM from Snyder Field.
