CHARLOTTESVILLE, Va. – The Wofford volleyball team was not deterred after dropping the first set, battling back to defeat Virginia in four frames (17-25, 25-23, 25-15, 25-20) inside Memorial Gymnasium Saturday afternoon. The win pushes Wofford to 9-2 as the Terriers claim the Jefferson Cup Invitational crown and extend their winning streak to five matches. UVA drops to 7-3.
Â
The victory serves as the 300
th in the career of head coach
Lynze Roos. This was the first-ever meeting between the Terriers and Cavaliers, and it marks Wofford's first win over an ACC opponent since defeating Wake Forest in five sets in 2016. This outcome comes seven years to day after that win over the Demon Deacons, which also occurred on September 16 in 2016.
By winning the Jefferson Cup Invitational, Wofford has won three of the four non-conference tournaments it's played in this season. Upon the conclusion of the event, the All-Tournament Team was announced, featuring three Terriers.
Sarah MacLean was honored as the MVP of the event, and she was joined by
Emily Hodsdon and
Abbey Richman.Â
Â
Despite UVA winning the service line, 9-3, Wofford was only one kill short (49-48) and recorded one more assist (44-43). Blocks were even at nine apiece, but efficiency proved to be the decider. Wofford was guilty of only 13 attack errors with a .285 hitting percentage, whereas the Cavaliers committed more than double the errors with 28, hitting at a .153 clip.
Â
Sarah MacLean continued her hot streak, leading the Wofford offense with 12 kills, giving her 37 between the two matches this weekend after posting 15 yesterday.
Mary Emily Morgan just missed double-digits with nine kills, and
Addison Foote contributed eight.
Â
MacLean was one of three Terriers (minimum 10 attempts) to hit over .300 with a .357 clip on two errors and 28 swings.
Millie Loehr hit .455 with her five kills on 11 hits and no errors.
Annemarie Rakoski also showed out, topping the team with a clip of .600 on six kills with 10 attacks and no errors.
Â
Wofford's aces were split between
Abbey Richman,
Addison Foote and
Mary Emily Morgan, each of whom recorded one. Loehr topped the blocking efforts with six, and
Sarah Barham added three of her own.
Taylor Pecht dished 21 assists to pace the offense, and
Emily Hodsdon added 20 of her own. With nine digs, she just missed a second consecutive double-double.
Â
Abbey Richman recorded 19 digs to push her double-digit streak to 32 matches. Her 12
th dig was the 1,000
th of her career, making her the 18
th Terrier all-time to join the prestigious 1,000-dig club.
Â
Set one was a close fight early before UVA hit a rhythm and won nine of 10 points to hold a 17-9 lead. Despite Wofford's best efforts, the Cavaliers held on to win the set 25-17.
Â
Needing a response,
Sarah Barham delivered early for Wofford by tallying a kill on the opening rally of set two.
Mary Emily Morgan's ace made it a 3-2 lead early for the Terriers. The set went back-and-forth with UVA holding a late 21-19 advantage before Barham sent home another kill, sparking a four-point Wofford swing. But UVA would record two more points to tie the set at 23. But again it was Barham who came through with another kill for set point, and
Sarah MacLean delivered the deciding blow on the next rally for a 25-23 set two win, evening the match-up.
Â
Set three began as another see-saw battle, with Wofford holding a 13-10 lead after an
Addison Foote kill. Two Cavalier points cut the lead to one, but Wofford then claimed nine of the next 10 points to create hefty distance.
Sarah MacLean's kill sparked the initial four-point swing, and though a UVA kill ended that run, an attack error kicked off the ensuing five-point swing, all five points of which were granted via UVA errors. A tandem Sarah block by MacLean and Barham would ultimately ice the set 25-15 to bring the Terriers within a frame of victory. The Cavaliers committed 14 attack errors in the third set, just one shy of the amount of points the team won.
Â
Still rattled after the third frame, UVA opened the fourth with a pair of errors. Settling in to take a 4-3 lead, the Cavaliers then witnessed a five-point Wofford swing, highlighted by a
Sarah MacLean kill and
Abbey Richman ace, for an 8-4 edge. After trading some blows, UVA used a four-point run to pull within a point, 15-14. But Wofford returned the favor with its own four-point swing, punctuated by an
Annemarie Rakoski kill for a 19-14 Terrier advantage. After trading some points, MacLean brought about match point at 24-18. The Cavaliers gave a last-ditch effort with a pair of points, but
Addison Foote delivered the final dagger with a kill for the 25-20 set four triumph, sealing Wofford's victory.
Â
After concluding non-conference action with a Power Five victory, the Terriers will now set their sights on Southern Conference play. League action opens with a pair of road matches, beginning with a trip to Macon, Georgia, to face the Mercer Bears on Friday, September 22. First serve is set for 6:00 p.m.
