Volleyball Tops Elon in Straight Sets to Claim Wofford Invitational Crown

Terriers sweep through tournament with third straight-set win in a row

SPARTANBURG, S.C. – The Wofford volleyball team remained in rhythm inside Jerry Richardson Indoor Stadium Saturday afternoon with another straight-set victory over Elon (25-20, 25-20, 25-17). The triumph pushes Wofford to 4-1 on the season and drops Elon to 1-5.

The Terriers did not drop a single set in three matches over the weekend, going a perfect 3-0 to reclaim the Wofford Invitational title.

"It was awesome. They played really well," said assistant coach Shannah Carter of Wofford's tournament victory. "Each team kind of brought a different thing for us to look at, and they handled it really well – the differences, the adversity. It's great to get some wins at home."

Efficiency again played a major role, as Wofford hit .258 in comparison to Elon's .121 clip. Though it was the best hitting percentage of Wofford's three opponents this weekend, the Terriers did not allow any of the three participants to hit over .125 in match.

The Terriers also owned the service line, sending in seven aces while allowing only three. Each team posted four blocks, but Wofford dished a few more assists, 39-30.

The Wofford attack was again a balanced effort. Millie Loehr led the way with nine kills, but Addison Foote and Ella Schomer were not far behind with seven each. Schomer's tally matches her best to this point in the freshman's young career. The youngster also topped the club with a .778 hitting clip, committing no errors.

"A lot goes out to Taylor [Pecht]," said Schomer of her career day. "I think our connection was going well today. It was a lot of just seeing where the block was, kind of looking out at what the defense was doing, really trying to find what was open. And I think it really clicked today."

Foote tallied three of Wofford's seven aces. Emily Hodsdon and Abbey Richman each added two. Sarah Barham, Loehr and Foote each posted two blocks to pace the netminding efforts.

"I trust every single one of my hitters," said Hodsdon of the balanced attack behind her 20 assists. "I know that they're going to get the kills and whatever I give them, they're going to use it. We are really lucky and have a great offense at every single position, so my trust is in them, and they trust me getting the ball to them."

Hodsdon dished 20 helpers to pace the team, and Taylor Pecht added 13 of her own. Richman's 14 digs led the squad and extended her double-digit digging streak to 26-straight matches. Foote was not far behind with 11 of her own, and Mary Emily Morgan also contributed 11.

Set one was a back-and-forth battle until the later portions. Leading 19-18, Elon committed an attacking error to bring the match level. A Sarah MacLean kill then pushed Wofford in front, and the Terriers would hold that lead from there, claiming seven of the final eight points in the set. A tandem block by Millie Loehr and MacLean sealed the first set victory, 25-20.

Wofford led the entirety of set two, but Elon kept it close. The Phoenix pulled within 20-19 before an Ella Schomer kill created some breathing room. After bringing the score back within two at 22-20, the Phoenix gave up a kill to Millie Loehr. This sparked the final three-point swing of the set, which was again punctuated by a Loehr tandem block, this time with Addison Foote.

The third set again saw the squads trade blows early with Elon fighting to stay alive. But with a slight 16-15 lead in the middle goings, Wofford hit a stride and did not look back from there. A ball-handling error kicked off a five-point run for the Terriers, highlighted by a pair of Addison Foote aces. The Phoenix were unable to rebalance, and despite claiming two more points, they allowed two more aces to Abbey Richman, accentuating a 4-2 swing at the end that sealed Wofford's win for the match and tournament.

The Terriers will look to keep their momentum going as their seven-match homestand continues Tuesday night against High Point. Wofford is set to take on the Panthers at 6:00 p.m. inside Jerry Richardson Indoor Stadium.

The Wofford Invitational
With three-straight sweeps, the Terriers reclaimed the Wofford Invitational crown. This is Wofford's fourth event title over five editions of the tournament, dropping only last season's title to Eastern Kentucky.

Upon the conclusion of the tournament, the Wofford Invitational All-Tournament Team was announced, with three Terriers headlining the honorees. Millie Loehr was recognized as the MVP of the event, and she was joined on the team by Abbey Richman and Addison Foote.
