SPARTANBURG, S.C. – In a game that was tied at halftime, the Wofford College football team was defeated 23-13 by Chattanooga on Saturday evening at Gibbs Stadium. To open the second half the Terriers took a 13-6 lead, but the Mocs scored 17 unanswered points to pull away for the win.
Wofford opens the season at 0-5 and 0-2 in the Southern Conference, while #22 Chattanooga is 4-1 overall and 3-0 in league play. The Terriers were led by
Ryan Ingram with 64 rushing yards and
Kyle Parsons with 47 rushing yards. Pauly Seeley was 15-of-29 passing for 150 yards, with nine different receivers catching passes. Chattanooga quarterback Chase Artopoeus was 15-of-30 passing for 197 yards, while Gino Appleberry had 93 rushing yards.
"I thought we played a really good game and executed well on both sides of the football," said head coach
Shawn Watson. "At the half I felt good about the way we were playing because I saw our hard work playing off. Our guys defensively came up with a really good plan and that created the three turnovers. In the end, you wish you could have done a couple of things better. I am proud of the way Pauly Seeley is playing for us as a true freshman as he faced an elite defensive line at this level. We are trending in the right direction. Chattanooga is a good, playoff caliber football team. We need to be more detailed in our work but we were a lot better today than what we were a week ago. We just need to keep working."
The Mocs had the ball to open the game and had two first downs before
Damien Curtis intercepted Chase Artopoeus at the 44-yard line. Wofford had three first downs before getting on the board with a 31-yard field goal by
Bridger Jones with 7:07 on the clock in the first quarter. The Terrier defense forced a three-and-out on the next drive by the Mocs, which included a sack by
Brandon Maina. With the ball back, Wofford put together a ten-play drive that ended with a 47-yard field goal by
Bridger Jones to take a 6-0 lead on the first play of the second quarter.
Chattanooga had a 38-yard kickoff return after the field goal, but went three-and-out and punted.
Ryan Ingram ran for a first down and
Jordan Davis had a receiving first down, but the drive stalled and Wofford punted. The Mocs had a pair of first downs and then kicked a 42-yard field goal to make it a 6-3 games with 8:19 left in the second quarter. Wofford went three-and-out and punted on their ensuing drive. With the ball back, the Mocs had a 19-yard run and a 32-yard completion to move down field but the Wofford defense held and Chattanooga could only add a 32-yard field goal to tie the game at 6-6 with 4:27 on the clock in the first half. Wofford gained one first down before punting and the Mocs took over at the 34-yard line with 1:43 left in the half. After a 25-yard pass completion to move across midfield,
Damien Curtis came up with his second interception of the game to end the drive. Wofford ran one play to end the first half.
The Terriers had the ball to open the second half and Pauly Seeley found
Alec Holt for a 39-yard completion. After a
Kyle Parsons rushing first down move the ball inside the 20,
David Legette scored a nine-yard rushing touchdown for a 13-6 lead at 12:33 in the third quarter. The Mocs had one first down before punting. Wofford had one first down but then the Mocs came up with an interception on the 36-yard line to take over. After a 29-yard completion, Chase Artopoeus ran the ball in from three-yard out the tie the game at 13-13 with 7:36 on the clock. Wofford had one first down before punting. After trading punts the Mocs took over at the Wofford 44-yard line and had a pair of first downs. They gained two first downs and then took the lead on a 32-yard field goal with 13:16 left in the game. Wofford gained one first down and punted. The Mocs then put together a 12-play drive that covered 78 yards and was capped by a two-yard touchdown run to take a 23-13 lead with 5:18 remaining. Wofford went three-and-out and punted. Chattanooga had one first down before
Harrison Morgan ripped the ball out of the runner's hand for a fumble and recovery with 2:06 on the clock. The Terriers had two first downs, but then Seeley was hit and fumbled with the ball recovered by the Mocs. After gaining a first down on a 41-yard run, the Mocs took a knee to end the game.
Wofford had a 297 total yards, with 150 passing yards. Chattanooga had 362 total yards, with 197 of those passing yards. Chattanooga had 19 first downs to 16 for the Terriers. Wofford was 6-of-16 on third down and 1-of-1 on fourth down. Chattanooga was 2-of-10 on third down. Wofford was called for nine penalties and Chattanooga was called for four in the game. The Terriers had a 31:41 to 28:19 time of possession advantage, their first advantage of the season.

This was the 30
th meeting between the two teams, dating back to 1927. The series is tied at 15-15 after Chattanooga has won the last four meetings.
The interception thrown by Pauly Seeley in the third quarter was the first by the Terriers this season.
Damien Curtis had his first two career interceptions. It was the second straight game a Terrier had a pair of interceptions in a game (
Maximus Pulley vs. VMI).
The forced fumble by
Harrison Morgan was the third of his career.
On defense,
David Powers led the team with 10 tackles, followed by

The 47-yard field goal by
