Atlanta, Ga.- Faced with deficits early in each half, Wofford men's soccer found the answers to salvage a 2-2 draw in Atlanta against Georgia State.
Bryan Silva put the Panthers ahead 1-0 in the 4th minute for his first goal of the season and the first action of the game. Sophomores
Nikolai Rojel and
Jakob Andersson each had shots to tie the match in the 14th minute, but Rojel's shot hit off the crossbar and Andersson's was saved by the goalie. Bryan Akongo, the assistant on Silva's goal, tried to double the Panther lead in the 17th minute only to be denied by senior goalkeeper
Cameron Victor for his first of three saves on the night.
Andersson would have another shot on goal saved by Georgia State in the last flurry of offense for the Terriers until right before the halftime whistle. In the 44th minute, a foul called against Georgia State's Marley Stephenson resulted in a penalty kick opportunity for Wofford.
Nikolai Rojel, named the Southern Conference Offensive Player of the Week earlier in the day, stepped up for the Terriers and put his third goal of the season in the back of the net to go into the half tied at one.
Similar to how the match began, Georgia State cracked the Wofford defense for a 2-1 lead only 91 seconds into the half. However, unlike how the match began, the Terrier response came swiftly. Rojel had his first attempt for the equalizer saved in the 53rd minute, but given another chance just under two minutes later, the Danish forward fired one past the keeper and drew the match even at two apiece. Freshman
Fabian Menendez tallied his first assist of the season on the strike and junior
Hugo Moldin notched his second assist.
The multi-goal performance not only gives him his fourth such outing of his career, but is the third time in his Wofford career he has scored in consecutive games (his longest streak is three straight matches from 9/17-9/27/22).
The Panthers used a rush in the last ten minutes of action to try and find a game winner, but the Wofford defense stood tall. Of five shots taken by Georgia State in that span, only one was on target and it found the hands of
Cameron Victor in goal.
Now 0-2-2 on the season, Wofford returns home for the start of a three-match home stand that begins on Tuesday, September 12, against UNC Asheville. Last season's matchup in Asheville ended in a 2-2 draw. This season's matchup is slated to kickoff at 7 PM and will be streamed on ESPN+.
