SPARTANBURG, S.C. – The Wofford volleyball team served up two victories Friday in the Jerry Richardson Indoor Stadium, opening its Terrier Invite with a straight-set sweep of Presbyterian (25-18, 25-19, 25-19) in the afternoon before downing Saint Francis in four sets (25-20, 25-19, 17-25, 25-14) in the nightcap. Wofford improves to 6-2 after the triumphs.
Â
Game One – vs. Presbyterian
Wofford controlled every facet of the match against Presbyterian, most notably delivering 12 aces while allowing just five from the Blue Hose. The Terriers also out-blocked the Blue Hose, 7-5, and dished more assists, 31-25. Wofford's .164 hitting percentage surpassed Presbyterian's .038 clip.
Â
The Wofford attack was paced by
Sarah Barham with her 13 kills. She hit .591 with 22 swings and no errors.
Addison Foote added eight kills of her own. Barham also led the blocking efforts with four.
Â
Emily Hodsdon dished 20 assists to lead the squad. She added a pair of aces.
Taylor Pecht was the top server for Wofford, contributing four aces, and fellow freshman
Bri Mahoney added three of her own. Pecht entered the contest with five aces in her career, and she nearly matched that total in the match. Mahoney's aces were the firsts of career.
Â
Abbey Richman scooped 17 digs to further her double-digit streak to 28-straight matches. Mahoney racked up nine to just miss double-digits herself.
Â
The first set was a back-and-forth battle at first until Wofford created separation in the middle-goings. A
Millie Loehr kill put the serve in
Taylor Pecht's hands, and she took advantage by immediately sending home three aces in a row. This kicked off a 10-point run that featured all four of Pecht's aces in the match. Wofford led 22-16 and never looked back, racing to a 25-18 set one triumph.
Â
Set two was more of a fight, as Wofford erased a 10-10 tie with a pair of
Sarah Barham kills and an
Emily Hodsdon ace to pull in front 13-10. The squads traded more points from there, with Wofford leading 21-18. Another Barham kill kicked off a three-point run that was highlighted by a
Millie Loehr block. This helped the Terriers pull away late to a 25-19 win to move within a set of victory.
Â
The Blue Hose opened the third set with a serve, but
Sarah Barham immediately took it for Wofford with a kill. This opened a five-point run that saw
Bri Mahoney deliver three service aces, the firsts of her career. Presbyterian put forth an effort to fight back, but that initial hole proved too much to climb out of as the Blue Hose remained a step behind the rest of the way. A three-point run later in the set was punctuated by a
Mad Wilson kill, making the Wofford lead 22-15. Presbyterian stringed together a couple of instances of back-to-back points, but it was all for naught as
Carson Eubanks notched a kill to precede a Blue Hose attack error for match point. Wilson then struck again, delivering the final blow for the 25-19 set three win, sealing Wofford's straight-set sweep of Presbyterian.
Â
Game Two – vs. Saint Francis
The nightcap against Saint Francis proved to be a battle with most statistical categories relatively even. The Red Flash delivered one more ace, 7-6, and tallied five more kills, 47-42. But Wofford dominated the net with nine blocks to Saint Francis' four. The Terriers also out-hit the Red Flash .226 to .114, notably committing only 14 errors to the 30 of Saint Francis.
Â
Sarah Barham again led the offense with 11 kills. Her total for the day stands at 24, and she hit .364 in the match against the Red Flash.
Addison Foote added nine more kills, and
Millie Loehr recorded six.
Â
Emily Hodsdon dished a team-best 28 helpers and recorded 11 digs for her second double-double of the season and the 24
th of her career. She also led the service efforts with three aces, giving her a total of five between the two matches today. Those five contributed to a total of 18 Terrier aces between the day's two matches. Hodsdon is now two aces away from 100 in her career.
Â
"It's always nice being in your home gym – you kind of know how to serve in there," said assistant coach
Shannah Carter of the day's serving success. "So I think that's helped us out a ton, and the girls are just being really aggressive and going after it trying to get ready for conference."
Â
Barham was also stout at the net, recording seven blocks to pace the squad.
Abbey Richman's 19 digs topped the team and extended her streak of consecutive matches with double-digits to 29 in a row. Foote just missed double figures with eight.
Â
"They're just being really aggressive," said Carter of the blocking success. "They're going over, low and tight. They're trying to take away as much space as possible. We do a lot of training with our blockers, and they're just really showing their maturity and their experience as seniors. And they're doing a great job."
Â
The first set was a back-and-forth tilt that Saint Francis led in the middle portions, 16-14. But a
Sarah Barham killed preceded a pair of Barham blocks, and a
Mary Emily Morgan kill capped a four-point run to push Wofford in front, 18-14. Another four-point swing would seal the set, 25-20, punctuated by an
Addison Foote block.
Â
The Terriers opened set two with four consecutive points, but the Red Flash again battled with the Terriers early. But with the set tied at 13-13,
Sarah MacLean tallied a kill to spark a six-point swing in which Wofford took advantage of four Red Flash attack errors. The 19-13 lead proved too much for Saint Francis to overcome, as Wofford would stave off a late push to record the final four points and win set two, 25-19.
Â
Set three was all about runs, as Saint Francis posted a five-point swing early before Wofford runs of four and three pushed the Terriers ahead, 12-11. The teams traded blows with an
Addison Foote kill bringing Wofford within three, 19-16. But the Red Flash then won five points in a row, and despite a
Millie Loehr kill, Saint Francis claimed the set, 25-17, to force a fourth.
Â
Emily Hodsdon opened the fourth serving for Wofford, and she sent in three aces in a row as part of the Terriers winning the first seven points. After trading blows, a
Bri Mahoney kill sparked a four-point swing for a 15-6 Wofford lead. Saint Francis would remain a step behind the rest of the way, as a
Sarah Barham kill and
Abbey Richman ace brought the Terriers within two points of victory, 23-11. The massive deficit was too much for the Red Flash, as they committed a pair of errors to spell defeat and seal Wofford's four-set victory.
