SPARTANBURG, S.C. – The Wofford women's soccer team (5-11-2, 1-7-1) battled to a close 2-1 loss against the Mercer Bears (11-4-3, 5-2-2) in what was the regular season finale at Snyder Field on Sunday afternoon. The game was all knotted up at one-all until Mercer scored the game-winning goal in the 83
rd minute.
Mercer kicked the day off with four shots within the first 15 minutes of action, including the first goal of the game in the eighth minute to take an early 1-0 lead. The Terriers responded, however, with a beautiful shot from
Megan Childress in the 10
th minute, but the Mercer keeper was able to corral the attempt.
The Bears continued to apply pressure, but the defensive unit of Wofford held firm in the remainder of the half despite facing six more shots. The Terriers stayed calm on the attack, patiently waiting until the 41
st minute to score the equalizer. Sophomore defender
Satya Tarafdar connected with
Ines Obradovac for Tarafdar's first assist of her career, along with Obradovac's ninth goal of the season – the most goals scored in a single-season since Hayley Younginer set the program record with 21 in 2017. Wofford would head into the break tied at 1-1.
In the early goings of the second half, Mercer displayed its offensive aggression by taking seven shots in the first 12 minutes. Senior defender
Hailey Roth saved a goal in the 51
st minute against the Bears' leading scorer, as she blocked back-to-back shots in a one-on-one situation. The Wofford defense stayed strong until the 83
rd minute when the Mercer offense finally broke through to score the game-winning goal.
It was a scrappy day for both sides with four yellow cards handed out, three to Wofford, one to Mercer, along with 13 fouls from the Terriers and seven from the Bears. Mercer outshot Wofford 26 to nine, with 10 on target for the Bears and four for the Terriers. Wofford took four corners on the afternoon while giving up six. Goalkeeper
Elizabeth Navola recorded eight saves on the day compared to three from the Mercer keeper.
Wofford concludes the regular season with a record of 5-11-2, 1-7-1. The team will open round one of the Southern Conference Tournament as the No. 8 seed and will host No. 9 VMI on Tuesday, October 29 at Snyder Field. Earlier this season, the Terriers battled the Keydets to a 1-1 draw at Snyder Field. Wofford holds the edge with an all-time record of 12-1-2 against VMI.
