Women’s Soccer Falls in SoCon Quarterfinals

CULLOWHEE, N.C. – The No. 8 Wofford women's soccer team (6-12-2, 1-7-1) fell to No. 1 seed Western Carolina (14-2-3, 8-0-1) 6-1 in the Southern Conference quarterfinals at the Catamount Athletic Complex on Friday evening.

It was a quick start for the SoCon regular season champions, as the team jumped on the board in the second minute of action to take an early 1-0 lead. The Catamounts kept the pressure on, scoring goals in the sixth, seventh, 12th and 14th minutes to extend the game to 5-0 with 30 minutes remaining in the half. Western Carolina scored its sixth goal of the first stanza in the 25th minute. Wofford would head into the break trailing 6-0.

The second half saw a much calmer slate of soccer, as the Terrier defense held Western Carolina scoreless in the final 45 minutes. Rylee Godbold, who subbed in at goalkeeper in the 23rd minute, had a strong showing with seven saves on the night, with her only goal allowed on a penalty kick.

Megan Childress and Hayden Fredericks had several good looks on the goal in the second half to lead the offensive attack. Childress finally broke through the stout Catamount defense in the 85th minute of action for her eighth score of the season. Bailey Mullen registered the assist on the score, her third of the season.

The goal by Childress brings her to 20 points on the season to tie Ines Obradovac for the team lead. Childress and Obradovac serve as the first Wofford duo to total 20 points apiece in a single season since Faith Stewart (35) and Amanda Berman (34) in 2000. It marks the first goal allowed by Western Carolina at home since 2023.

The loss tonight concludes the 2024 season for the Terriers, who finish 6-12-2 overall and 1-7-1 in SoCon play. This is the second straight season the team has made it to the quarterfinals of the conference tournament, with both years resulting in a loss to Western Carolina.
