Football Earns 17-13 Win At Samford

BIRMINGHAM, Ala. – Down 13-7 in the third quarter, the Wofford College football team scored the final ten points to secure a 17-13 win over Samford at Pete Hanna Stadium on Saturday afternoon. The win was the first by the Terriers in the series since 2014.

Wofford is now 4-5 overall and 2-4 in the Southern Conference. Samford is 3-5 overall and 2-3 in league play. The Terriers were led by Amari Odom with 12-of-20 passing for 203 yards. Kyle Watkins had 112 receiving yards and Ryan Ingram added 87 rushing yards and a touchdown. Samford was led by Micah Kelly with 87 rushing yards. Quincy Crittendon was 31-of-41 passing for 242 yards and a touchdown.

"It was a great team win," said head coach Shawn Watson. "We played all three facets well today. It was a huge boost to the team to get Amari Odom back. He played very well and made some big completions down the field. The offensive line did a great job and the running backs got in there and allowed us to balance the offense. The defense went out and put the brakes on a high-tempo offense. They did a good job of containing them, especially in the redzone. We played well all the way around and it is a good feeling."

The Terriers had the ball to open the game and Amari Odom completed first down passes to Kyle Watkins and Carlos Anaya. A roughing the passer call moved the Terriers across midfield, but on fourth-and-two a pass was incomplete to turn the ball over on downs. The Bulldogs had three first downs before a sack on third down by Marion Smokes forced a punt that was downed at the one-yard line. Wofford went three-and-out and punted, with Samford also going three-and-out and punting. The Terriers took over at the 15-yard line and on third down had a fumble that was recovered by the offense.

After a Wofford punt, the Bulldogs put together a twelve-play drive that covered 76 yards and was capped by an eight-yard touchdown pass for a 7-0 lead at 5:54 in the second quarter. Wofford responded with a first down run by Ryan Ingram and a 35-yard pass from Amari Odom to Kyle Watkins. After another first down run by Ryan Ingram, the Terriers were faced with fourth-and-one from inside the one-yard line. A quarterback sneak up the middle with the help of the offensive line resulted in a Wofford touchdown. The game was tied at 7-7 with 1:51 left in the second quarter. Samford then had three first downs and regained the lead on a 36-yard field goal with sixteen seconds left in the first half. Wofford ran one play before halftime.

The Bulldogs had the ball to open the second half and had four first downs to move inside the 10-yard line. On third down, a sack by John Boyles forced Samford to settle for a 30-yard field goal and a 13-7 lead at the 9:11 mark of the third quarter. Wofford opened the ensuing drive with a 20-yard completion to Kyle Parsons and added a 37-yard completion to Kyle Watkins for a first down. Ryan Ingram added a rushing first down as Wofford entered the redzone. Amari Odom scrambled for a first down to the one-yard line and Ryan Ingram scored the touchdown to take a 14-13 advantage with 3:44 left in the third quarter. The Bulldogs went three-and-out on their next drive and punted.

Wofford had a first down reception by Kyle Watkins and then Amrai Odom found Isaiah Scott for a 37-yard completion. On a deep pass to the endzone, the ball was batted in the air several times and finally a Samford defender came up with the interception. The Bulldogs had three first downs and lined up for a 42-yard field goal that went wide left with 11:14 on the clock in the fourth quarter. The Terriers had a first down run and a 24-yard reception by Kyle Watkins. A snap over the head of Amari Odom lost 17 yards and the Terriers had to punt. Starting at the five-yard line, Samford went three-and-out and punted. Amir Annoor caught the punt at midfield and returned it to the 27-yard line with 5:52 on the clock. Wofford added a 38-yard field goal by Devery Cagle to make it a 17-13 game with 3:42 remaining. The Bulldogs had a pair of first downs to move across midfield. On fourth-and-three, a pass was incomplete and Wofford took over with 36 seconds remaining. After one kneel-down in victory formation, the Terriers secured the 17-13 win.
