Football Closes Out 2024 Season at South Carolina

THE SOUTH CAROLINA GAME
Wofford will play the final game of the 2024 season on Saturday at South Carolina ... The Terriers are 5-6 entering the game, following victories over Gardner-Webb (21-20), #14 Richmond (26-19), VMI (31-16), Samford (17-13), and Furman (19-13), along with losses to #13 William & Mary (28-21), #12 Mercer (22-3), Western Carolina (21-17), #19 Chattanooga (37-5), #23 East Tennessee State (24-7), and The Citadel (30-17)... In the Southern Conference, the Terriers finish at 3-5 this season ... In a series that began in 1895,  South Carolina holds a 20-4 lead over the Terriers ... The Gamecocks have won the last 17 meetings, with Wofford's last win in 1917 ... South Carolina was 5-7 overall and 3-5 in the Southeastern Conference last season ...  So far in 2024 they are 7-3 overall, with a 5-3 mark in the SEC after wins against Kentucky, Oklahoma, Texas A&M, Vanderbilt, and Missouri ... They are ranked #19 by the AP and #19 in the AFCA Coaches Poll.

TERRIER TOP NOTES
Here are the top notes of interest heading into the game against South Carolina ...
    • Wofford has played five games against teams in the NCAA FCS  top 25, the most since 2017.
    • Against FBS teams, Wofford is 1-25 overall with the win in 2000 against Louisiana-Monroe.
    • Five Terriers have earned SoCon Player of the Week honors so far this year, the most since eight in 2017.
    • Shawn Watson is entering his second full season as head coach of the Terriers.
    • The Wofford defense is 37th in the nation and fourth in the SoCon, with the passing defense 14th overall and first in the SoCon.
    • Nine players were named to the All-Southern Conference preseason team. Five players earned spots on the first team, the most in the league, including RB Ryan Ingram, TE Jordan Davis, DL Brandon Maina, LB David Powers and DB Maximus Pulley.    

ABOUT WOFFORD
Shawn Watson is in his second full season as head coach of the Terriers. On offense, the offensive line features returning starters Quincy Hughes and Briggs Kearse. Clayton Hixon, Luke Moise and either Santana Haynes-Goodman or Mason Howard are at the other three spots. The pro spread offense usually sees three receivers, one tight end and one running back in most formations. Kyle Watkins has 43 catches for 681 yards, while Isaiah Scott has 27 catches for 334 yards. Jordan Davis starts at tight end and has 18 catches and three touchdowns. Ryan Ingram leads the team in rushing with 650 yards on 142 carries with a team-best six touchdowns. At quarterback, Amari Odom started the first four games, Pauly Seeley started the next three contests and Bryce Corriston started against ETSU. Odom has been back for the last three games and is 102-of-183 passing for 1,350 yards and six touchdowns.
    The defense remains a 3-4 base, with the defensive line led by returner Anthonie Lattany, who has three sacks. He is joined by Marion Smokes and Seth Foster. The linebacker position has three returners from last season. Jalen Marshall leads the team with 89 tackles and 12 tackles for loss, while John Boyles and David Powers also started last season. Isaiah Managa steps in to start at the other outside linebacker position. In the secondary, Amir Annoor and Isaiah Wadsworth return at cornerback. At safety, transfer C.J. Coombes joins returner Maximus Pulley.
    Devery Cagle is 8-of-9 on field goals and 13-of-14 on PATs. Sam Spence has 55 punts with a 40.9 average and has a 55.2 average on 23 kickoffs. Cavan Craig has a 59.1 average on 10 kickoffs. Tommy DiLiegro handles long snapping duties.

COMPARED TO LAST YEAR
With eleven games played, the Terriers have shown improvement over last year. The five wins are equal to the last two years combined (5). The team has scored 184 points compared to 152 in 2023, while also giving up 233 points as opposed to 278 last season.

INTERCEPTION INCREASE
Wofford had only five interceptions in the 2022 season and then had nine interceptions in 2023. So far in 2024, the Terriers have twelve interceptions by eight different players. The twelve interceptions are ranked16th in the nation.

JERRY RICE AWARD WATCH LIST
Defensive back C.J. Coombes is one of 30 players named to the in-season watch list of the Stats Perform 2024 Jerry Rice Award, which honors the FCS freshman player of the year in college football's Division I subdivision. Coombes, a second-year freshman from Bellefonte, Delaware, is second on the team in total tackles with 66. Among the SoCon leaders he is ninth in total tackles and he is ranked 18th in the nation in solo tackles.

TERRIERS AGAINST FBS TEAMS
The 2024 season marks the 23rd time in the last 24 fall seasons the Terriers play against a member of the FBS (NCAA Division I-A). Overall, Wofford is 1-25 in those games. In 2011, Wofford had a lead at Clemson in the third quarter. At South Carolina in 2012, the game was tied at 7-7 at the start of the fourth quarter. Wofford was down five points to Georgia Tech in 2014 with ten minutes to go in the game. In 2017, Wofford trailed South Carolina 14-10 in the third quarter. Wyoming scored with 17 seconds left in the game in 2018. Wofford was scheduled to play South Carolina in 2020 but the game was canceled due to COVID-19. Virginia Tech was on the slate in 2022 (and in 2025) before the game at Pitt in 2023. South Carolina returns to the schedule in 2024 and 2028, while Clemson is scheduled again in 2027.
