Men’s Basketball Falls in Close Fight at Milwaukee

MILWAUKEE, Wi. - The Wofford men's basketball team (2-4) fell 76-74 to the Cream City Challenge hosts, Milwaukee Panthers (4-2), on Saturday afternoon at the UWM Panther Arena. The Terriers were called for 21 fouls in the final half, leading to 29 free throw attempts in the last 20 minutes for Milwaukee.

The Terriers were led by two double-digit scorers with Corey Tripp and Dillon Bailey scoring 18 points apiece. Both Bailey and Tripp achieved season highs in scoring. The team shot 49.2 percent (30-61) from the field while making six of its 24 attempts from deep.

Milwaukee had two 20-point outings to pave the way for the team. The Panthers struggled from the field in the first half, shooting just 34.9 percent and 3-for-12 from three-point territory. The second half, however, saw the team up its percentages to 63.6 from the field and 40 from downtown.

Wofford lost the battle on the glass, getting outrebounded 40 to 31. Milwaukee was able to convert 15 offensive rebounds into 21 points, while the Terriers grabbed 10 offensive boards for 14 points. Justin Bailey pulled down a season-high seven rebounds to pace the team, along with Belal El Shakery and Anthony Arrington, Jr. finishing with four each. The teams were deadlocked at 40-all in paint points.

The Terriers committed a season-low seven turnovers on the night, but Milwaukee also handled the ball well, only committing seven as well. The difference came at the line, as Milwaukee shot 33 free throws for 19 points. The second half saw 21 fouls called on Wofford, resulting in 29 of the 33 free throw attempts coming in the last 20 minutes. Wofford closed the day with 15 attempts, eight of which were makes.

Kyler Filewich got the scoring started for the Terriers, knocking in a nice hook shot to tie the game at two-all. Milwaukee claimed an early four-point lead, but the Terriers found their first lead of the game at 10-8 with 13:32 remaining in the half. Dillon Bailey notched back-to-back lay ins to propel the team. Wofford led Milwaukee 12-10 at the 12-minute media timeout in what was a low scoring affair.

Milwaukee came out of the stoppage with five-straight points to regain the lead. Anthony Arrington, Jr. put an end to the miniature run with an offensive rebound and layup. The teams went back-and-forth for several minutes, until Arrington nailed a pull-up jumper to take the advantage for the remainder of the half. The Terriers would head into the break leading Milwaukee 30-29.

Corey Tripp put the team on the board first to open the second stanza, scoring a nice layup to get things going. Milwaukee cut the deficit to one point, but the Terriers answered with an 8-2 run to go up by seven points with 17:24 remaining in the contest. Wofford kept the Panthers at bay for the next several minutes, going up by as many as nine points with just under 15 minutes of action left.

Milwaukee then embarked on a 13-3 run over the next four minutes of game time. The Panthers would take a 50-49 lead after the run – the first lead by the team since the 4:10 mark in the first half. From there it was a game where both teams traded baskets, with neither team taking more than a three-point lead for the next six minutes.

Wofford stretched its advantage to five points with five minutes left, but Milwaukee scored eight points compared to the Terriers' three over the next couple of minutes to tie the game at 64 with 3:50 remaining. A pair of free throws from Corey Tripp lifted the team to a two-point lead, but again the Panthers answered on the other end. Tripp responded with another basket to put the Terriers ahead once more, but Milwaukee found a score on the other end.

The Panthers gained a one-point advantage with 2:00 remaining after cashing in on a free throw, and it was a lead that the team would not give up for the final minutes. Despite Milwaukee shooting just 57.6 percent from the charity stripe, the Panthers hit five of their final six attempts to seal the game.

The Terriers will look to bounce back tomorrow, Sunday, November 23, against Portland State. The final game of the Cream City Challenge will be played at 12:00 p.m. eastern.
