THE FURMAN GAME
Wofford remains on the road as they travel to Furman for the second of back-to-back SoCon road games ... The Terriers are 4-5 entering the game, following victories over Gardner-Webb (21-20), #14 Richmond (26-19), VMI (31-16), and Samford (17-13), along with losses to #13 William & Mary (28-21), #12 Mercer (22-3), Western Carolina (21-17), #19 Chattanooga (37-5) and #23 East Tennessee State (24-7) ... In the Southern Conference, the Terriers are 2-4 this season ... In a series that began in 1889 - the first football game played in South Carolina - Wofford and Furman have met 97 times with the Paladins holding a 56-34-7 lead ... The last six games have been split 3-3, with the Terriers winning 19-13 in Spartanburg in 2023 ... Furman was 10-3 overall last season and 7-1 in the Southern Conference to win the league ... They reached the quarterfinals of the NCAA FCS Playoffs ... So far this season they are 2-6 overall, with a 1-3 mark in the Southern Conference after a win over The Citadel and losses to Chattanooga, Western Carolina, and VMI.

TERRIER TOP NOTES
Here are the top notes of interest heading into the game at Furman ...
    • Wofford has played five games against teams in the top 25, the most since 2017.
    • Five Terriers have earned SoCon Player of the Week honors so far this year, the most since eight in 2017.
    • Shawn Watson is entering his second full season as head coach of the Terriers.
    • The Wofford defense is 38th in the nation and third in the SoCon, with the passing defense 23rd overall and first in the SoCon.
    • Wofford returns 16 starters overall, including seven on offense, seven on defense and two specialists.  
    • Nine players were named to the All-Southern Conference preseason team. Five players earned spots on the first team, the most in the league, including RB Ryan Ingram, TE Jordan Davis, DL Brandon Maina, LB David Powers and DB Maximus Pulley.

ABOUT WOFFORD
Shawn Watson is entering his second full season as head coach of the Terriers. On offense, the offensive line features returning starters Quincy Hughes, Anthony Garcia and Briggs Kearse. Luke Moise and Mason Howard will be at the other two spots. The pro spread offense usually sees three receivers, one tight end and one running back in most formations. Kyle Watkins has 38 catches for 575 yards, while Isaiah Scott has 21 catches for 277 yards. Jordan Davis starts at tight end and has 14 catches and three touchdowns. Ryan Ingram leads the team in rushing with 427 yards on 107 carries with a team-best five touchdowns. At quarterback, Amari Odom started the first four games, Pauly Seeley started the next three contests and Bryce Corriston started against ETSU. Odom was back as starter against Samford.
    The defense remains a 3-4 base, with the defensive line led by returners Brandon Maina and Anthonie Lattany. They are joined by O'marion Brown. The linebacker position has three returners from last season. Jalen Marshall leads the team with 74 tackles, while John Boyles and David Powers also started last season. Nick Morgan steps in to start at the other outside linebacker position. In the secondary, Amir Annoor and Isaiah Wadsworth return at cornerback. At safety, transfer C.J. Coombes joins returner Maximus Pulley.
    Bridger Jones is 4-of-5 on field goals, along with a 62.5 average on kickoffs. Devery Cagle is 5-of-6 on field goals. Sam Spence has 47 punts with a 41.4 average and has a 55.2 average on kickoffs. Tommy DiLiegro handles long snapping duties.

COMPARED TO LAST YEAR
With nine games played, the Terriers have shown improvement over last year. The four wins have doubles the mark from 2023 (2). The team has scored 148 points compared to 122 in the first nine games in 2023, while also giving up 190 points as opposed to 262 last season. Big plays are a part of the success, with 30 plays of 20 or more yards so far, compared to just 19 in the first seven games in 2023.

INTERCEPTION INCREASE
Wofford had only five interceptions in the 2022 season and then had nine interceptions in 2023. So far in 2024, the Terriers have twelve interceptions by eight different players. The twelve interceptions are sixth in the nation.

JERRY RICE AWARD WATCH LIST
Defensive back C.J. Coombes is one of 30 players named to the in-season watch list of the Stats Perform 2024 Jerry Rice Award, which honors the FCS freshman player of the year in college football's Division I subdivision. Coombes, a second-year freshman from Bellefonte, Delaware, is second on the team in total tackles with 66. Among the SoCon leaders he is ninth in total tackles and he is ranked 18th in the nation in solo tackles.

INSIDE WOFFORD FOOTBALL WITH COACH SHAWN WATSON
Wofford Sports Properties, the multimedia rights partner for Wofford College Athletics, has announced the return of "Inside Wofford Football with Coach Shawn Watson." The show is part of an expanded selection of coaches shows that began last season. The shows, sponsored by Yokohama, are hosted by the voice of the Terriers, Jim Noble. "Inside Wofford Football" begins in September and will debut every Monday during the football season.
