Men's Basketball Falls to Lipscomb in First Road Contest

NASHVILLE, TENN. – The Wofford men's basketball team (1-1) fell in its first road contest of the year 78-69 to the Lipscomb Bisons (2-1) at Allen Arena on Saturday evening. The game served as the first of two bouts between the Atlantic Sun Conference and the Southern Conference, with North Alabama coming to Spartanburg on Sunday, December 1.

Wofford was led by three double-digit performances on the night. Dillon Bailey led the team with a 17-point effort, while Corey Tripp chipped in 15 points. Kyler Filewich rounded out the three double-figure scorers, posting 12 points to go along with 12 rebounds for his 12th career double-double and second of the season.

The Terriers were outrebounded 35 to 31 by the Bisons but took the edge in second chance points, scoring 16 compared to 13 from Lipscomb. Filewich led the team with five assists, marking his third-career game with 10 or more points, 10 or more rebounds and five or more assists. That ties Lee Skinner for the most in the Division I era (1995-96).

The team finished the game shooting 44.8 percent (26-58) from the field and 38.7 percent (12-31) from downtown. Lipscomb shot the ball at a 48.3 percent (28-58) clip while finishing 33.3 percent (7-21) from deep. The Terriers tallied 12 helpers on the night but were turned over 10 times.

Lipscomb scored the first basket of the night, but Kyler Filewich had a quick answer on the other end for his first score of the game. The Bisons then rolled into a 10-0 run to a take a 14-4 lead with 15:13 remaining in the first stanza. A pair of threes from Dillon Bailey and Anthony Arrington, Jr., along with a strong and-one from Kahmare Holmes, shortened the deficit to 18-13.

The Bisons rattled off a quick 6-0 run with back-to-back three-point plays to give the team some breathing room, but Kyler Filewich put an end to the skid with a strong tip-in layup. Corey Tripp would pick up two fouls within eight seconds, forcing the team to sub him out until the final minute of the half.

A few possessions later, Kahmare Holmes kick-started a 7-0 run with a couple of hits from the charity stripe. Jackson Sivills followed the two points with his first triple of the night, along with a nice turnaround shot from Filewich to cut the lead to 32-29 with 1:53 left in the half. Wofford would head into the break trailing 38-32.

The second half saw a rejuvenated offensive attack from the Terriers, who shot 53.4 percent from the field and 63.6 percent from three compared to 37.5 percent and 25 percent in the first half. It was more back-and-forth action, however, as Dillon Bailey opened the last 20 minutes with a strong layup, but Lipscomb again had the answer.

Corey Tripp had himself a hot second half, scoring two of his 12 second half points on a nifty jumper. The score pulled the team within six points heading into the first media timeout of the half. Right out of the stoppage, Lipscomb found themselves on the right side of a 10-0 run to stretch the margin out to 16 points.

Wofford did not waver, though, scoring three-straight treys from Arrington, Tripp and then Dillon Bailey. Bailey followed the latter three up with two-straight buckets to keep the lead within 10. Another 8-2 run from the Bisons kept the Terriers away, as Lipscomb took a 72-57 lead with 5:19 left in the game. Wofford continued to fight but could not climb back, losing its first road game of the season 78-69.

The Terriers will continue their month-long road slate as the team will travel to Clinton, South Carolina, on Wednesday to take on Presbyterian College at 7:00 pm. Saturday, November 16, Wofford will travel to Durham, North Carolina, to take on the Duke Blue Devils at Cameron Indoor Stadium.
