Women’s Basketball Drops Road Contest at Furman

GREENVILLE, S.C. – The Wofford women's basketball team fought hard Thursday night in Timmons Arena, but the Terriers could not overcome the hot shooting of the Furman Paladins, falling 64-51 on the road. Wofford falls to 15-9 (7-3 SoCon) with the result, and Furman improves to 14-12 (4-6 SoCon).

Wofford shot 31.5 percent from the field and 27.6 percent from three, but Furman put forth marks above 40 percent in both categories. The Terriers kept the rebounding battle close, but the Paladins held the advantage 36-32. Wofford won the turnover battle, however, forcing 18 Paladin miscues with 14 committed.

Rachael Rose was the lone Terrier in double figures, tallying 25 points to extend her program-record double-digit scoring streak to 43 games in a row. It marked her seventh-straight game posting over 20. She added in six boards and five assists with three steals.

Annabelle Schultz fell just short of double-digits with eight points. Maddie Heiss added six points with four rebounds, and Ja'Rae Smith tacked on four points with a pair of boards. Evangelia Paulk and Sara Deidda each scored three points. Paulk added a team-leading nine rebounds with three steals, and Deidda picked up three boards. Indiya Clarke rounds out the Wofford scoring with two points and four rebounds.

The first quarter was tight, with Furman holding the early 5-0 advantage. But back-to-back threes by Maddie Heiss gave Wofford its first lead, and after Furman pulled ahead later, Rachael Rose put home a free throw before burying a trey for another Wofford advantage. Despite a late Paladin free throw, Wofford led 10-8 after one quarter of action.

Furman opened the second quarter with a three-pointer for the lead, but Rachael Rose hit one of her own in response to claim it right back. But the Paladins found a rhythm and utilized a 10-point run to pull ahead 21-14 late in the frame. A Rose steal set up a three by Annabelle Schultz to break the run with just over a minute to go, but it would be the final points of the half as the Terriers entered the break down 21-17.

Wofford opened the third quarter with its best attempts to push back, as Rachael Rose put home three foul shots after getting fouled on her three-point attempt. But Furman hit a three from the field, and the Paladins seemed to match every bucket Wofford could claim in the quarter from there. A 25-point third quarter by Furman extended its lead to 46-30 entering the final frame.

Wofford gave a good push back in the fourth quarter with 21 points, but Furman would notch 18 of its own to stave off the comeback attempt. The Paladins hit three triples in the first four minutes of the quarter to push their lead over 20. Wofford would embark on a 12-point run late in the quarter to close the gap, aided by a Rachael Rose trey and another by Sara Deidda. But the damage had already been done, as despite Annabelle Schultz's trey for the final score, Furman claimed the 64-51 win.

The Terriers get a week off before looking to bounce back with two more road contests next week. First, Wofford travels to Birmingham, Alabama, for a bout with Samford on Thursday, February 22. Tip-off is set for 7:00 p.m. ET. Two days later, the Terriers trek to Macon, Georgia, to square off against Mercer with a 2:00 p.m. Saturday afternoon start time.
