Spartanburg, SC – Wofford softball dropped the final pool play match to Rhode Island 4-1 but retained the number two seed and dispatched third seeded Northern Kentucky 4-2 to earn a spot in tomorrow's finale against St. Francis (PA).
GAME 1
The Terriers had players in scoring position in five of the seven frames but were only able to plate one runner- redshirt freshman
Kaytlin Greenwood off a junior
Havalynn Abernathy single in the fifth inning. As a team, Wofford stranded ten runners on the day- tied for a season high.
Rhode Island's decisive inning came in the top half of the fifth inning, taking advantage of two Wofford errors to plate three runs and chase Greenwood from the game. Her replacement, sophomore
Margaret Axelson, allowed one base runner over the final seven Rams outs of the contest.
GAME 2
A rematch of Wofford's first game in the invitational, again found success in the fifth inning against the Norse. Trailing going into the bottom half of the fifth, freshman
Olivia Lenzen worked a one out walk to the start the Terrier rally. Successive hits from
Kaytlin Greenwood and
Desirae Devine loaded the bases for
Abbi Campbell who, while unable to drive in a run, kept the bases loaded for Wofford's leading hitter,
Hope Ingle.
Northern Kentucky opted to pitch around Ingle and the junior walked in Wofford's first run to tie the game. Fellow junior
Havalynn Abernathy brought in the next Terrier run off a hit by pitch to give Wofford the lead, and finally
Megan Towery plated two more Terriers with a single to left center.
A run in the seventh inning for Northern Kentucky brought the game tying run to the plate in Sydni Barnes, but Wofford forced a game-ending 6-3 double play (shortstop to first base) and secured Wofford's spot in the finale, where it will rematch St. Francis (PA).
