Spartanburg, SC – Wofford softball kept USC Upstate off the scoreboard for the first five frames, but conceded two runs in the sixth as the Terriers dropped the intra-city matchup with the Spartans 2-0.
Wofford began the game with singles from
Abbi Campbell and
Havalynn Abernathy but a strikeout from
Kendall Wylie kept Wofford from plating the game's first run.
Following the first inning, Wofford managed only two more base runners- a single from
Hope Ingle in the sixth inning and a walk from Wylie in the fourth.
Starting pitcher
Tayven Stephenson faced early trouble when USC Upstate loaded the bases in the second inning with two outs but got herself out of trouble by forcing a swinging strikeout. Stephenson retired the Spartans in order in all of her other frames pitched to end with a final line of (4 IP, 2 H, BB, 2 K). The freshman right hander has only allowed one earned run over her last three appearances totaling 15.1 innings.
Appearing in relief, sophomore
Margaret Axelson set down the first three Spartan hitters she faced in the fifth inning before conceding a leadoff single from Upstate's Alanna Deal to start the sixth. A three base error committed by Wofford on the subsequent batter allowed Deal to come around and score the game's first run. Two batters later, an RBI groundout to second base scored the second and final Spartan run.
With the loss, Axelson drops to 1-1 on the season but retains an unblemished ERA as both runs scored tonight against her were unearned.
Now .500 on the season, Wofford stays in the Palmetto State for its next matchup taking on Presbyterian on Wednesday, February 28. First pitch is scheduled from Clinton, South Carolina, for 6 PM.
