Stephenson Spins Gem over Buffalo

Charleston, SC – Freshman Tayven Stephenson put together eight scoreless frames to earn her first career complete game shutout as Wofford softball opened the Low Country Classic with a 1-0 win over Buffalo in extra innings.

Stephenson earned the win by scattering her six hits across all eight innings as freshman only once allowed either more than one hit in an inning or an extra base hit. But in both cases where those things did happen, the defense came up with the clutch play to keep the Bulls of the scoreboard- in the third inning, Stephenson gave up a single to center field with runners on first and second, but freshman Megan Towery came up with the run saving throw as she threw the Buffalo runner out at the plate to end the inning and maintain the 0-0 draw.

Then in the sixth inning, Buffalo opened a double to right center that threatened to score the game's opening run after an error allowed the runner to advance to third, but again the defense came up with the play at the plate, this time with freshman Abbi Campbell gunning down the runner at the plate. Following this play, Stephenson sat the next to hitters down in order.

Moving forward to the eighth inning, Campbell began the inning at second base and moved over to third after a Hope Ingle groundout to the pitcher, to set up a runner on third with two outs situation.

However, junior Havalynn Abernathy didn't need to make a play as Campbell was able to score the decisive run on a wild pitch. In the bottom half of the eighth, Stephenson set the first two Bulls batters down on strikes and got the final out with a pop up to shortstop.

In earning the win, Tayven Stephenson finished with a final line of 8 IP, 6 H, and 6 Ks. The freshman also moved to 2-0 on the season, moving her into a tie with Abby Greenwood for the team lead in wins.

Inclement weather in the Terriers second game of the day meant that the Terriers ended the opening day of the Low Country Classic 1-0 with three, potentially four, games remaining. Wofford's slate tomorrow, March 2, 2024, begins at 10 AM in a rematch with Buffalo followed by a showdown with the Evansville Purple Aces at 12:30 PM. Neither game will be streamed, so fans will need to either follow along on social media or on live stats via the Wofford athletics website.
