Charleston, SC – Wofford softball improved to 3-0 at the Low Country Classic after defeating Buffalo 7-3 in Game 1 and Evansville 4-3 in Game 2.
Game 1
Save for one swing, the combination of sophomore
Margaret Axelson and freshman
Abby Greenwood kept Buffalo off the scoreboard while scoring the most runs the team has scored since February 16, against Northern Kentucky and the most hits since February 17, against Rhode Island.
A three-run homer for Buffalo in the third inning represented the first earned runs of the season off Axelson, and ultimately chased her from the game, having gone 2.1 innings and gave up three runs on six hits. Enter
Abby Greenwood, the freshman got the Terriers out of the third without further damage and limited the Bulls to three hits the rest of the game- stranding two of them on base in the seventh to win the game.
Meanwhile Wofford did its damage in the fifth inning- scoring six runs on six hits and took advantage of a Buffalo error.
Kalli Petty,
Olivia Lenzen and Bergen
Needles loaded the bases in consecutive plate appearance with one out to start the rally before
Abbi Campbell placed a single into left field for the first Terrier run of the inning and followed up by
Desirae Devine working a walk to bring in the game tying run.
Where Wofford broke the game open was the next batter in
Hope Ingle. The designated player unloaded the bases on the first pitch, finding the right centerfield gap to score Campbell and Needles before a Buffalo error allowed Devine to score from third base. Ingle herself came around to score two batters later on a
Kaytlin Greenwood single to right field to cap scoring for the Terriers.
Buffalo responded by loading the bases in the top of the seventh with one out, but a clutch play from the defense not only sealed the game in Wofford's favor, but did so without allowing a run. The Bulls hit a grounder to third base where
Desirae Devine tagged the base for the 5-unassisted and then gunned the runner down at the plate to end the game.
GAME 2
Freshman
Tayven Stephenson followed up performance the prior day with another complete game, this time staving off a late Evansville.
Ally Bigham struck first for the Terriers, striking a double to left centerfield that scored
Kaytlin Greenwood to take a 1-0 lead. Another run in the fifth doubled the Terrier lead, which proved a pivotal run as Evansville tied the game in the following frame- ending a stretch of 17 straight scoreless innings for the freshman.
In the bottom half of the inning, Wofford put runners on first and third with one out and used a fielder's choice and a productive out to push the Wofford lead back out to two runs.
Evansville manufactured one run back in the seventh inning, but stranded the game winning run at first as the final Purple Ace hitter harmlessly grounded out to Stephenson to win the game for Wofford
