Softball Completes Undefeated Weekend in Charleston

Charleston, SC – Wofford softball used a four run fifth inning to defeat the Low Country Classic host College of Charleston 6-1 and clinch a 4-0 weekend.

The Terriers got on the board first in the top of the first with a Havalynn Abernathy single that scored Desirae Devine from second base for a 1-0 lead. Wofford improved to 3-0 this season when scoring in the first inning and 5-0 when scoring first.

After College of Charleston pushed across its only run in the bottom of the second, Wofford pulled back in front in the fourth inning when Olivia Lenzen doubled home Kalli Petty for the 2-1 lead. For the freshman catcher, the RBI was the first of her career and capped a weekend in which she hit 4-for-8, an RBI and a run scored. By putting together a hit in every game she appeared in over the weekend, Lenzen now sports a three-game hitting streak.

The following inning, Ally Bigham continued to show off the power swing, plating two runs on a double to centerfield and extending the Terrier lead to 5-3. Bigham's RBI double punctuated a weekend in which the junior hit .444 (4-for-9), drove in four runs and notched three extra-base hits. A Kalli Petty RBI single the next hitter capped Wofford's scoring at six runs.

Picking up the win for Wofford was Abby Greenwood, throwing the final five innings in relief of Margaret Axelson. Greenwood scattered two hits across the five frames and leaned on the defense- inducing eight flyouts and six groundouts while only striking out one herself.

For Greenwood, the effort was part of a two-win weekend with the freshman 9.2 innings of shutout softball and only allowing five hits and a singular walk while lowering her season ERA to 2.23.

The Terriers only place once this upcoming week, traveling to Clinton, South Carolina, to face Presbyterian in a make up game that was canceled due to weather on February 28. First pitch is scheduled for 6 PM.
