North Charleston, SC – Wofford softball reached the ten-win milestone in program history, defeating the Charleston Southern Buccaneers 4-3 in extra innings Friday night.
The Terriers took advantage of two Buccaneer errors to plate the decisive runs, using a fielding error in the eighth to push across
Bergan Needles and then Ally
Bigham scored an inning later after an error against the Charleston Southern catcher following a dropped third strike. In addition to scoring the go ahead run, Bigham also brought in the game-tying run in the sixth inning off an RBI single that scored
Desirae Devine.
Bigham's production has been huge for the Terriers as the team improved to 3-0 when the junior tallies an RBI and 3-0 when she comes around to score a run. Bigham has also provided a big lift to the Wofford offense, batting .300 over her past four games with three RBIs.
For the part of Devine, the freshman raised her season batting average to .289 after going 2-for-4 at the plate with a run scored and two more stolen bases (the first multi-steal game of her career). Devine has yet to be caught on the base path, going 8-for-8 on stolen base attempts this season (three of which coming in the past three games).
Defensively, Wofford lowered its already conference leading team ERA to 2.25 following 5.1 innings of one-run softball for starter
Margaret Axelson and 3.2 innings of shutout softball from
Abby Greenwood. For Axelson the appearance is her first since March 3, against Charleston Southern, and the first since being named the SoCon February Pitcher of the Month earlier in the day. The sophomore righty also fanned a season high five batters in her start.
Greenwood meanwhile appeared in her 11th game of the season, and her fourth straight game with an appearance, to earn a team-leading fifth win. Greenwood allowed two runs, but at neither were earned runs, her season ERA lowers to 2.05.
The extra innings triumph for the Terriers improves the team to 2-0 all-time in extra inning affairs and 5-0 in games played in Charleston, South Carolina. Wofford will conclude the series with Charleston Southern tomorrow, March 16, 2024, with a doubleheader beginning at 1 PM- both matches tomorrow can be seen on ESPN+.
