North Charleston, SC – Wofford softball fell 3-4 and 1-2 to the Charleston Southern Buccaneers on Saturday, March 16, with both games being decided on walk-off hits by Charleston Southern.
Game 1
The Terriers got out of the gate strong with two runs in the first inning, marking Wofford's first multi-run opening frame in program history, however the program's first loss after scoring first.
Kaytlin Greenwood opened scoring for the Terriers with an RBI lineout to left field.
Desirae Devine would come around to score during the next at bat courtesy of a Buccaneer error. An RBI double from Devine in the fourth inning capped scoring for the Terriers and capped the freshman's series- finishing 3-for-10 with a double, walk, RBI, two runs scored and two stolen bases. Devine currently sits tied for the team lead for hits with
Hope Ingle.
Since moving to the leadoff spot, Ingle has reached base five times in twelve at-bats, including drawing three walks in this contest alone- tying her with Greenwood for the most walks in a single game by a Terrier this season. Â
As for Greenwood, she would tally her first extra base hit in the seventh inning when she hit a leadoff double down the left field line. Combined with a hit in the second half of the doubleheader and the freshman is tied for the longest active hitting streak on the team with
Ally Bigham at four games.
In the circle for the Terriers,
Tayven Stephenson worked the first two innings and into the third before getting pulled in favor of
Margaret Axelson. Stephenson finished with a line of 2 IP, 5 H, 2 ER and 2 BB. Axelson was able to provide some stability for Wofford, working around five hits going into the final frame of the contest without conceding a run. However, down to their final strike, the Buccaneers were able to double home both the game tying and winning run in one swing of the bat to even up the series.
The loss drops Axelson's season record to 1-2 despite only haven given up more than two runs once in the season. Her ERA currently sits at 1.67, which is 0.07 points off the team lead currently held by Stephenson.
GAME 2
Offense was hard to come by for the Terriers, who scattered three hits across the seven innings and scored only on
Kaytlin Greenwood's first home run of the season in the sixth inning. Combined with a
Gracie Parker walk and two Buccaneer errors, the Terriers were only able to put six runners on base compared to the previous game's 16 batters.
Ally Bigham continued to produce well offensively in Charleston, South Carolina- following up her 4-for-9 performance at the Low Country Classic on March 1-3, with a 3-for-8 series against Charleston Southern with an RBI, run scored and two walks.
Defensively,
Abby Greenwood took the circle for the Terriers and was able to throw the entire game for the third complete game in five starts by the freshman.
Combined with her winning performance on Friday, Greenwood threw 10 innings of two-run softball (only one earned) that lowered her ERA back under the 2.00 threshold.
