Spartanburg, SC – Four runs in the fourth inning doomed Wofford softball in its 6-1 loss to the USC Upstate Spartans on Wednesday, March 20.
The Terriers did strike first in the contest, bringing around
Kalli Petty from second base off a base hit by
Hope Ingle, Wofford's only hit of the contest. However, USC Upstate responded with four runs in the next frame that began with a passed ball from Wofford starting pitcher
Abby Greenwood that tied the game. A single from Alanna Deal on the very next at bat brought in two more Spartans to make it a 3-1 contest. Finally, an Emily Stern base hit scored the final Upstate run of the half inning.
The Spartans tacked on runs in the sixth and seventh innings to bring the score to its conclusion at 6-1.
Taking the loss for the Terriers was
Abby Greenwood, whose record to dropped to 5-6 on the season after going four innings and giving up four hits, four runs (three earned), a walk and one strikeout.
Margaret Axelson appeared in relief for the Terriers, giving the team two innings and surrendering a single run on two hits and a walk.
Kendall Wylie threw the final frame for Wofford and finished with a stat line of one inning pitched, one run, two walks and one strikeout.
The Terriers are back on the road for their next four contests, beginning on Saturday, March 23, as they travel to Mercer to open Southern Conference play. In addition to being the team's conference debut, it marks the first time the team has played a game outside the state of South Carolina. That series will be played in two days with a doubleheader on March 23, beginning at 2 PM and concluding the following day (Sunday, March 24), with a single game being played at 1 PM. All three games will be broadcast on ESPN+.
Wofford then finishes the road swing with a trip up to Boiling Springs, North Carolina, to face Gardner-Webb on Wednesday, March 27, at 6 PM- that game has yet to announce if it will be broadcast.
