Softball Splits Doubleheader with Mercer

Macon, GA – Wofford softball split a pair of games with Mercer on Sunday, March 24, losing game one 3-4 before winning game two 11-8 and earning the program's first SoCon victory.

Kaytlin Greenwood put in a pair of impressive performances, with the freshman launching her second homer of the season in game one and tallying a double and three RBIs in game two. Over the course of the weekend, Greenwood went 3-for-8 at the dish with three runs scored, four RBIs, a double, homerun, three walks and a stolen base, all of which resulted in her raising her batting average 29 points. With the homerun today, Greenwood now has the most homeruns on the team so far as well.

Megan Towery was a similar force at the plate, notching two hits in each game today (2-for-2 in game one and 2-for-5 in game two) including her first collegiate homerun in the first game to put Wofford on the board. Then in the second game, much like Greenwood, Towery drove in three runs with her two hits- the third of which proved the decisive RBI as it gave Wofford nine runs in the game during the sixth inning. Her successes at the plate (4-for-9, 4 RBIs, 2 runs, a homerun, and a walk) over the weekend raised her batting average 78 points up to .250 on the season.

With their three RBI performances in the series finale, Greenwood and Towery join Hope Ingle as the only Terriers to drive in three or more RBIs in a game this season (Ingle's 3 RBI performance came February 16, 2024, against Northern Kentucky). Kaytlin Greenwood also extended her on-base streak to an active team high 12 straight games.

In the circle, Abby Greenwood lowered her ERA back under 2.00 after throwing a combined seven innings across both games that included a complete game in game one. Despite taking the loss in game one, Greenwood only allowed one earned run (four total runs allowed) on eight hits, three walks and four strikeouts. She then returned in game two to get the final three outs of the game after Tayven Stephenson allowed a three-run homer that pulled the Bears to 11-7.

Wofford's win in game two keeps the program undefeated when scoring over ten runs and notching ten or more RBIs (the team has also not lost a game this season when scoring four or more runs).

The Terriers round out their four-game road swing with a trip to Gardner-Webb on Wednesday, March 28, before coming home to take on Samford on March 29-30.

Other Note of Interest
  • Kate Platte's two RBIs in game two are the first two RBIs of her collegiate career.
