SPARTANBURG, S.C. – In a contest that was decided in the final singles match, the Wofford College women's tennis team was defeated 4-3 by Samford at the Reeves Tennis Center on Sunday afternoon. The Bulldogs won the doubles point and won three of the six singles matches, with the final match decided in a third set tiebreaker.
 
Doubles began with the Bulldogs winning 6-2 at the #3 position. At #2 doubles, the match was tied at 2-2, 4-4 and 5-5 before Samford won the final two games for a 7-5 win which clinched the point. The #1 doubles match was tied at 3-3 and 5-5, but was ultimately won 7-5 by Samford.
 
In singles, Wofford won the first set in four of the six matches. Breda Brennan was the first to finish as she picked up a 6-0, 6-4 win at the #1 position. After the Bulldogs claimed the #4 position 6-3, 6-2, Catherine Blouin earned a 6-3, 6-3 win at the #6 position which tied the overall match at 2-2.
 
The Bulldogs took a 3-2 lead with a 6-4, 7-5 win at the #3 position. At #5 singles, Grace Agster won the first set 7-5 and led in the second set 4-3. The Bulldogs won the next two games for a 5-4 advantage, but Agster won the final three games for the 7-5 win that tied the overall match at 3-3. Brianna Wilbur won the first set 6-2 at the #2 position, but lost the second set 3-6. In the third set, it was tied at 3-3, 4-4, 5-5, and 6-6 as both players held serve. In the tiebreaker dominated by long rallies, the Bulldogs came out with an 8-6 win that clinched the overall match.  
 
Wofford is now 11-6 overall and 1-3 in the Southern Conference. Samford is 5-10 overall and 1-2 in league play.  
 
Wofford remains at home for a match on Tuesday, March 26, against Gardner-Webb. That match was postponed from earlier in the season due to weather.
