SPARTANBURG, S.C. – On Friday afternoon, the Wofford College women's tennis team earned a 5-2 win over Mercer at the Reeves Tennis Center. The Terriers took the doubles point and then claimed four of the six singles matches for the league victory.
In doubles, Wofford's pair of
Breda Brennan and
Brianna Wilbur claimed a 6-3 win at the #2 position.
Grace Agster and
Lily Woods added a 6-4 win at the #1 position to clinch the doubles point. At the #3 position, the Terriers led 5-4, but were defeated 7-5 by the Bears.
Singles opened with a Mercer win at the #4 position, which was then matched by a win at the #6 position by
Catherine Blouin by a 6-3, 6-3 score.
Grace Agster lost the first set at the #5 position, but came back with 6-0 and 6-2 wins which gave Wofford a 3-1 lead in the overall match. At #2 singles,
Brianna Wilbur dropped the first set 4-6 before coming back with a 6-2, 7-6 win as she claimed the tiebreaker 7-3 to give the Terriers the match win.
Lily Woods won the first set 7-6 at the #3 position and was up 4-3 when her opponent retired. In the final match to conclude,
Breda Brennan won the first set at the #1 position 6-4, but lost the final two sets for the 5-2 final score.
"The energy we came out with in doubles set the tone for the match," said head coach
Krissy Hall. "We played smart and battled on every point. It was a complete team win and I am so proud of the team!"
Wofford improves to 12-6 overall and 2-3 in the Southern Conference. The 12 wins matches the number of wins last season. Mercer falls to11-6 overall and 2-2 in league play.
Wofford will be on the road on April 5 at Western Carolina before returning home on Sunday, April 7 for the final home match of the season.
