Spartanburg, SC – Wofford softball scored four unanswered runs across the fourth and fifth innings to close out the series against the Samford Bulldogs with a 5-4 win.
The trio of
Kate Platte,
Havalynn Abernathy and
Megan Towery combined for seven of Wofford's nine hits and drove in four of the five runs. However, it was the bat of
Abbi Campbell that got the Terriers on the board first when she put a ball in play that resulted in an error committed by the Samford pitcher, which scored
Gracie Parker from second base in the third inning.
At this point, the Bulldog lead was only 2-1, but tripled that lead after scoring two runs in the top of the fourth inning. But after this half inning, Samford could manage only a single hit and two walks. The reason behind this was the entrance of right-hander
Margaret Axelson, who threw three innings of shutout softball and struck out three batters en route to her second win of the season and the first since February 9, when the team earned its first ever victory against Robert Morris.
Towery put the initial chunk into the Bulldog lead in the bottom of the fourth, scoring Abernathy who had led off the inning with a double to left field. Towery's base knock extended her hitting streak to six games and tied
Hope Ingle for the longest such streak by a Terrier in program history.
Four batters later Towery would come around to score herself alongside
Hannah Maddox (pinch running for
Ally Bigham) when
Kate Platte singled past the shortstop to knot the game up at four runs apiece. With six RBIs on the season Platte has never had a game in which she tallied one RBI in games in which she does record an RBI.
The fifth inning began similarly to the previous, as Abernathy again led off the inning with a double, this time to centerfield. The junior transfer from Georgia State wound up ending her day 3-for-4 with two doubles, and two runs scored. The multi-hit game is her fifth on the year and the first since March 5, at Presbyterian. And then just like in the fourth inning, Towery singled up the middle and scored Abernathy to take the 5-4 lead.
Sitting second on the team in RBIs at 11, Towery has collected seven of those RBIs in conference play alone.
Now 2-4 in conference play, Wofford will be back on the road for its next series when it travels to Chattanooga for a three-game series with the Mocs on April 6 and 7. All three games are slated to be streamed on ESPN+.
