JOHNSON CITY, Tenn. – In the first Southern Conference match of the season, the Wofford College women's tennis team was defeated 6-1 by East Tennessee State at the Dave Mullins Tennis complex. The Buccaneers won the doubles point and then claimed five of the six singles matches for the win.
The doubles began with the Buccaneers winning at the #2 position. The Wofford duo of
Emely Kahrs and
Brianna Wilbur then had a 6-1 win at the #3 position. The doubles point was won by ETSU with a 6-3 win at the #1 position.
After doubles, most singles matches were in the second set when a rain delay was called. The match was moved to indoor courts in Bristol, where the action continued on two courts.
The Buccaneers earned straight set wins at the #2, #5, and #3 positions to clinch the match. At #1 singles,
Breda Brennan lost the first set 6-1, then won the second set 6-3 before falling 7-5 in the third set. After a straight set win at the #6 position by ETSU,
Emely Kahrs was able to earn a 6-3, 6-4 win at the #4 position to get the Terriers on the board.
Wofford (8-4, 0-1) will host UNC Asheville on Sunday at 1:00 p.m. East Tennessee State is 7-5 overall and 3-0 in league play.
