Softball Falls at Winthrop

Rock Hill, SC – Wofford softball was unable to keep pace with the Winthrop Eagles' offense, falling on the road 6-1 in the mid-week showdown.

The Terrier defense excelled at containing the Winthrop offense for 3.2 innings, conceding the game's opening run via an error by Gracie Parker that allowed the Eagles to score from second base. The runner at second was just the second hit allowed from starter Margaret Axelson, who was coming off a 2-0 weekend in Chattanooga. The sophomore transfer continued on into the fifth inning, allowing two more hits and another run alongside two outs before getting pulled in favor of Abby Greenwood.

Despite taking the loss, Axelson's final line of 4.2 IP, 5 H, 2 R (ER), BB, 2K is the fourth consecutive outing in which she has allowed two or fewer earned runs, which has lowered her season ERA to a team-leading 2.70 runs per game.

In relief, Greenwood spun 1.1 innings and allowed four runs, all earned, on seven hits. After allowing five runs (four earned) against Chattanooga on Sunday, April 7, this appearance marks just the first time the freshman has allowed four or more earned runs in consecutive appearances (20 appearances) and still holds a sub-3.00 ERA (2.85).

With only two hits in the contest, Wofford had to look elsewhere to manufacture offense and used the walk, hit by pitch and effective base running to score its run. Abbi Campbell led off the sixth inning with a walk followed by Havalynn Abernathy reaching via the hit by pitch to put runners on first and second without an out. A productive out from Kaytlin Greenwood allowed Campbell to advance to third and then Abernathy's stolen base attempt garnered an errant throw from the Winthrop catcher, thus allowing Campbell to score from third.

Gracie Parker was also able to extend her on base streak to thirteen straight games after working a walk in the fifth inning.

Megan Towery meanwhile started a new hitting streak following the disruption of her six-game hitting streak over the weekend in Chattanooga with her new streak
sitting at two games. Towery is currently second on the team in batting average at .283, sitting behind only Abernathy (.290).

Wofford returns home for its next series, hosting the Western Carolina Catamounts in a continuation of SoCon play. The first two games will be played on Saturday, April 13, beginning at 1 PM and concluding on Sunday, April 14, at 1 PM for game three. All three games will be streamed on ESPN+.
