Spartanburg, SC – Wofford softball survived runners on second and third with no outs in the eighth inning without giving up a run to eventually pull off the 4-3 walk-off win in the tenth inning of game two against the Western Carolina Catamounts, salvaging a split in day one of the two-day series (lost 4-11 in game one).
Game 1
Two Catamount homeruns, including a grand slam in the first inning, put Wofford in a hole it was ultimately unable to overcome. And while the Terrier offense finished with four runs on six hits, the team was unable to tally their first hit until the fifth inning.
Wofford's two homeruns conceded to Western Carolina was just the third time this season Wofford's pitchers have allowed multiple home runs in the same game (first since March 27, at Gardner-Webb) and the first time at home- also just the second and third homeruns allowed at Hope Field in total this season by the Terriers.
Abby Greenwood, Wofford's pitcher of record, recorded the shortest start of her collegiate career- lasting one inning with a final line of 1 IP, 2 H, 4 R (all earned), 3 BB and no strikeouts. Her three walks allowed is just the third time this season, and first at home, the freshman has issued more than one walk and is the first such instance since March 24, at Mercer.
Relieving Greenwood was
Sydney Baker, who very nearly matched her career high innings pitched- working the next four innings and allowed three runs on seven hits and a walk (her career high is 4.1 innings pitched at Gardner-Webb).
Kaytlin Greenwood broke up Western Carolina's no-hit bid with a lead off triple in the fifth, the first of her career, and scored the very next batter when
Hope Ingle grounded out to third.
Gracie Parker notched the fourth extra base hit of her season in the sixth, marking the start of a three-run inning that saw Parker score off an
Abbi Campbell single up the middle, Campbell score off a
Megan Towery sacrifice fly and then
Havalynn Abernathy score from a K. Greenwood single through the left side.
Greenwood's multi-hit performance (2-for-3, 3B, RBI, R) is her first since February 17 against Rhode Island at the Wofford Invitational here in Spartanburg.
Game 2
Margaret Axelson spun the Terriers' second complete game comprising more than the regulation seven innings (
Tayven Stephenson went eight innings against Buffalo at the Low Country Classic on March 1), when she threw all ten innings of Wofford's 4-3 win.
Axelson scattered 12 hits across the ten innings and often called her own number to get out of jams- being responsible for 17 of the 30 recorded outs (eight strikeouts and nine assists). Her eight strikeouts, in addition to representing a new Wofford career best, are both a team-high for single game strikeouts and the most by any Terrier pitcher this season. Similarly, nine assists are the most by any Terrier this season and tied for the third most nationally in a single game (the most by any pitcher in the country).
The sophomore transfer has also excelled against Southern Conference competition of late, putting together a combined stat line of 21 IP, 6 R (5 ER), 3 BB, 16 K and three wins in her last three appearances (2-0 at Chattanooga and 1-0 vs. Western Carolina).
Offensively,
Abby Gossett, making just her fourth start of the season (first since March 13 against Winthrop) delivered both Wofford's opening and closing RBIs- plating
Kate Platte with an RBI double in the first and
Olivia Lenzen in the tenth with a line drive that deflected off the pitcher's glove and into centerfield to win the game for the Terriers.
The final RBI marked the third hit of the afternoon for Gossett, capping her first ever multi-hit game in a Wofford uniform. She is now hitting .333 on the season (rose her batting average .119 points in game two alone and .179 points overall on the afternoon- entered the doubleheader batting .154).
Meanwhile,
Gracie Parker tacked on two more games to her on-base streak, sitting only two games back of
Hope Ingle's team record of 17 consecutive games reaching base.
