Spartanburg, SC – Six runs in the third inning put Wofford softball comfortably ahead of Western Carolina and cruised to a 7-2 win in the rubber match of the series and moved to 6-6 in Southern Conference play.
Preceding the big six run inning, Wofford jumped out to an early lead via an RBI double from
Kalli Petty to move ahead 1-0. The freshman infielder drew the start at second base in place of an injured
Kate Platte to mark Petty's first action since March 23 at Mercer.
Petty was then part of the third inning explosion, bringing home
Ally Bigham off a ground ball to third base that ended up scoring a second run after Petty drew an errant throw from the Catamount defense. On the day, Petty finished 1-for-3 with a double, two RBIs and a run scored.
But before Petty got to the plate in that inning, Wofford had already plated two runs with the first coming from a bases loaded walk drawn by
Megan Towery and an RBI single from
Olivia Lenzen in the following at bat.
For Lenzen, the RBI punctuated a series in which the catcher batted 5-for-7 at the dish with two RBIs and 2 runs scored. Lenzen had also previously never put together consecutive multi-hit performances until this weekend and now has four multi-hit games this season.
Following Petty,
Gracie Parker brought in the final two Wofford runs off a single into center field. Parker's two RBIs represent her third and fourth RBIs of the season and the first multi-RBI game of her career. However, the redshirt freshman did put together her second three-hit game of the season (3-for-3 with a walk and two RBIs), making her the only Terrier this season with multiple three-hit games or better.
Abby Gossett rounded out a productive weekend with a 2-for-3 series finale (6-for-8, 2B, 2 RBI across the series). She is now batting .381 on the season in 18 games played.
In the circle,
Abby Greenwood earned her sixth win of the season off her eighth complete game (7 IP, 4 H, 2 R (0 ER), BB, 7 K). Greenwood's win is the first by the freshman since March 15 at Charleston Southern and seven strikeouts is a new career best. As a team, Wofford is 8-1 when striking out the opponent five times or more and 6-0 in games with six or more strikeouts.
Wofford remains at home for its next two, hosting South Carolina State for a doubleheader on Wednesday, April 17, beginning at 3 PM.
