Greenville, SC – In a game that featured four combined hits, Wofford softball dropped the series opener to the Furman Paladins 0-1.
Furman plated the decisive run in the fifth inning, using a lead off single to breakup Terrier starting pitcher
Abby Greenwood's no-hitter and then a two out single to score the lead runner from second base. The loss is Greenwood's fifth loss this season when she has allowed two or fewer runs. However, despite the loss, her season ERA dropped from 2.90 to 2.80. Her final line read six innings pitched, three hits, one run (earned), three walks and two strikeouts.
Offensively, Wofford's lone hit came off the bat of
Megan Towery to lead off the third inning. The freshman outfielder would end up stranded at second base after swiping her first collegiate bag with two outs –
Abbi Campbell was set down swinging.
Furman's pitching tallied ten strikeouts over the course of the game, representing just the third time this season Wofford's batters have been fanned ten or more times, and the first loss by the Terriers in such games (wins coming against Buffalo on March 1, and at Charleston Southern on March 15).
With the loss, Wofford drops to 6-7 in conference play but retains a one game advantage over the Paladins with two games remaining in the series. Should the
Terriers sweep tomorrow, April 20th's, doubleheader, the team will have won three consecutive conference series and sit over .500 in the SoCon for the first time in program history.
Action will start from Pepsi Field at 1 PM tomorrow with game two to follow after that. Both games will be streamed on ESPN+.
