SPARTANBURG, S.C. – The Wofford College women's lacrosse team closed out the season with a 21-12 win over Presbyterian College on Saturday afternoon at Gibbs Stadium. The Terriers scored the first four goals of the game and were up 14-7 early in the third quarter. The Blue hose rallied with five straight goals to cut the lead to 14-12, but the Terriers scored the final seven goals in the game for the win on Senior Day.
Wofford (7-9, 4-4) was led by
Bria Foley with a season-high seven goals and three assists for ten points.
Carlie Cutinella added four goals, while
Emma Stalteri had three goals and an assist for four points. Foley also led the team with eight draw controls, with
Vivian Chiomento adding seven as the Terriers had a commanding 24-12 lead in draws.
Barrett Rowe picked up four ground balls and she caused a team-high five turnovers.
Ella Smithers had five saves in goal.
The Terriers began the game with a pair of goals each by
Bria Foley and
Carlie Cutinella for a 4-0 lead five minutes into play. After the Blue Hose scored, Wofford answered with a free position goal by
Addison Witkowski. Presbyterian got one goal back for a 5-2 score with 3:33 left in the first quarter. Wofford responded with five unanswered goals as Witkowski,
Emma Stalteri,
Shadan Bankston and
Bria Foley (two) pushed the lead to 10-2 at the ten-minute mark of the second quarter.
The Blue Hose scored back-to-back goals, but Wofford answered again with goals by
Carley Irvin and
Carlie Cutinella for a 12-4 margin. However, Presbyterian scored the last two goals of the first half to cut the advantage to 12-7 in favor of the Terriers.
The second half began with the Blue Hose adding a goal. Wofford picked up goals from
Carley Irvin and
Bria Foley for a 14-7 advantage with 10:05 on the clock. The tide then turned in favor of the Blue Hose, as they scored five straight goals to cut the lead to 14-12 at the end of the third quarter. In the final fifteen minutes, Wofford scored seven goals and held the Blue Hose scoreless on the way to the 21-12 final margin. The seven goals included two free position goals by
Bria Foley, two goals by
Emma Stalteri, and one each by
Carlie Cutinella,
Mia Leon and
Shadan Bankston. The goal by Leon was the first of her career.
Presbyterian College is 2-14 overall this season and 1-7 in the Big South. They were led by Willow Hammond with two goals and two assists for four points.
The game was the final contest of the season for the Terriers, as they finished fifth in the Big South standings and the top four teams advance to the championship. Prior to the game, the team's three seniors –
Shadan Bankston,
Avery Dew and
Addison Witkowski – were honored.
Overall, the team matched the number of wins both overall (7) and in the Big South (4), which are the most in school history. The team also set school records in goals (217), points (303), assists (87), ground balls (315), caused turnovers (171), free position goals (36) and lowest goals against average (15.63).
