SPARTANBURG, S.C. – Camden Wicker made the most of his first-career start, pitching the Terriers to an 8-3 triumph at Russell C. King Field Saturday afternoon as Wofford pulled even in the series with UNCG. Wofford improves to 20-9 (5-3 SoCon) with the Spartans falling to 16-13 (5-3 SoCon).
Camden Wicker (2-0) earned the win in his first-career start, pitching a career-high 7.0 innings with only one hit and two walks allowed. He surrendered one run, unearned, for his first-career quality start with three punchouts.
Alec Bouchard tossed the final 2.0 innings, allowing two runs on three hits. He struck out one batter with no walks issued.
UNCG starter Rob Ready (3-1) suffered the loss despite his own quality start with three runs allowed in 6.0 innings on five hits and a walk.
Marshall Toole extended his on-base streak to 29 games with three hits and three RBI to pace the team in both marks. He also swiped his nation-leading 26
th base of the season.
Daniel Jackson and
Jack Renwick each collected a pair of hits with Jackson knocking in two runs. One of his hits was a home run, his third of the season. The last Wofford RBI was collected by
Dixon Black.
The contest was a pitchers' duel early with zeroes on the board through the first three frames. Wofford finally broke through in the bottom of the fourth with a pair of runs on
Daniel Jackson's two-run home run, which he snuck just under the right field scoreboard.
UNCG responded in the top of the first, plating a run on an error to pull with one, 2-1.
The Terriers got that run back in the bottom of the frame with back-to-back singles by
Jack Renwick and
Marshall Toole. Wofford led 3-1.
Toole struck again for Wofford in the bottom of the seventh. After
Tyler Bak drew a walk and Renwick singled, Toole plopped a double just inside the left field foul line to plate Bak. Renwick would score on
Dixon Black's sacrifice fly, extending the Terrier lead to 5-1.
Wofford plated three more in the eighth. Back-to-back wild pitches allowed
Lucas Manning and
David Wiley to score, and Toole again came through with an RBI single to bring in Bak. Wofford carried an 8-1 lead into the ninth.
UNCG lifted a two-run homer in the top of the ninth, but Alex Bouchard held firm to close out the contest from there, icing the 8-3 Terrier triumph.
The rubber match of the series will be held tomorrow afternoon at 1:00 p.m. The contest is set to be streamed on ESPN+ with
Mike Eggert projected to start for Wofford against UNCG's Jay Miller.
