Softball Wins Shootout at Chattanooga for Series Win

Chattanooga, TN – Wofford softball capitalized on six Chattanooga errors to score 11 runs as Wofford claimed the series win over the Mocs 11-7.

The Terriers wasted no time getting on the board, plating one in the first inning courtesy of Havalynn Abernathy's first RBI since March 3, 2024, against College of Charleston. The junior transfer finished her day 2-for-3 with 2 RBIs, she currently leads the team in batting average 0.295 alongside co-leading the team with Desirae Devine for the most multi-hit games this season (six).

Two Mocs runs in the second were immediately cancelled out in the third when Wofford reached the first two batters of the inning, Kate Platte by a single and Abbi Campbell by error, and then took advantage of a bad throw from the Chattanooga shortstop to score both Platte and Campbell and take a 3-2 lead. The run scored was Platte's second of the day and she would finish the game with a team-high four runs scored, which are the most scored in a single game by any Terrier this season.

Since returning from injury right before the start of conference play, Platte has been a source of great offense for the Terriers- sporting a .440 batting average, seven RBIs, four multi-hit games, six walks and seven runs scored.

Chattanooga briefly retook the lead off a three-run homer in the bottom half of the inning, but the top of the fourth saw Wofford respond once again and this time took the lead for good. The inning began with back-to-back walks by Abby Gossett (pinch hitting for Olivia Lenzen) and Gracie Parker, giving the top of the order two runners on and no outs.

The top of the order delivered first with a Kate Platte RBI single and then an Abbi Campbell RBI single that scored a second run off a Chattanooga error. Campbell herself came around to score a few batters later on a passed ball opportunity before Megan Towery concluded the inning with an RBI single to score Kaytlin Greenwood.

Wofford tacked on three more runs in the inning to stretch its widest lead of the day at 11-5, and while the team conceded two runs in the bottom half of the fifth, prevented Chattanooga from threatening further in the last two frames.

Earning the win in the circle for the Terriers was Margaret Axelson, who followed up her complete game win in the previous game with another winning performance- this time spinning four innings of two-run softball in relief to improve to 4-4 on the season. The sophomore transfer from Birmingham-Southern mastered the Mocs, garnering the win in both of her appearances allowing only three runs over 11 total innings pitched and eight strikeouts.

The win is Wofford's first series win as a program and remains undefeated in series finales in the Southern Conference. Sitting 4-5 in the conference, Wofford is currently fifth in the standings (a game ahead of both Furman and Western Carolina).

Up next for the Terriers is the return game of a home and home series against Winthrop on Wednesday, April 10, at Winthrop followed by a weekend home series against Western Carolina. Games one and two will be played as a doubleheader on Saturday, April 13, starting at 1 PM and the finale on Sunday, April 14, also at 1 PM.

All three games of the Western Carolina series will be streamed on ESPN+.
