Softball Blanks Gardner-Webb in Final Midweek Game

Spartanburg, SC – Wofford softball kicked off the final week of its regular season with a 4-0 shutout over the Gardner-Webb Runnin' Bulldogs, avenging a loss to the team earlier in the year.

The Terriers jumped out to a 1-0 lead in the first via an error from the Runnin' Bulldogs that allowed leadoff hitter Kate Platte to score from second. The redshirt freshman was able to get herself into scoring position after singling to right field in her first at bat since returning from injury (missed seven games). By finishing one-for-three in the contest, Platte holds a season batting average of .400.

Two more runs in the third inning gave Wofford plenty of cushion after Hannah Maddox notched her third RBI of the season in the form of an RBI single that scored Gracie Parker. While just her ninth start of the season, Maddox has been in Wofford's starting lineup the past six games after starting just three times in her 20 previous appearances.

Olivia Lenzen meanwhile brought in Wofford's other run of the half inning, using an RBI single of her own to bring in Havalynn Abernathy. The catcher has been effective at the dish of late for the Terriers, collecting hits in three of the past four contests and bringing in an RBI in two of them.

Similar to Lenzen, Cadan Brinkman has also been a force at the plate, extending her hit streak to three games and has now driven in a run in consecutive games after a single through the left side scored Maddox for Wofford's final run of the night. With the run scored, Maddox became the sixth Terrier this season to score ten or more runs.

On the defensive side of the diamond, Margaret Axelson spun her second complete game shutout in three starts - allowing only three hits, walking two and striking out three. The sophomore transfer brings her shutout total up to three this season, which ties her with Western Carolina's Tessa Juett for the most in the SoCon. The right-hander also remains the only pitcher in the conference to hold an ERA below 2.00 currently this season.

Up next for the Terriers are the final three games of the regular season, taking on UNCG in a weekend series. First pitch of the series is currently slated for Saturday, May 4 at 1 PM, however weather forecasts could force some schedule changes.
