Game Recap: Softball |

Softball Celebrates Senior Day Sweep of Spartans

Spartanburg, SC – Wofford softball began the final weekend of the regular season with a series clinching sweep of the UNCG Spartans, taking game one 4-3 and then game two 12-5 behind a seven run sixth inning.

In between games, Wofford recognized its lone senior, Ally Bigham, for her contributions to the team over the past two seasons. Across both contests, Bigham tallied one hit, three walks and one run scored.

Game 1
Kalli Petty was one of three Terriers to tally a multi-hit contest (the others being Kate Platte and Hope Ingle), but Petty was the only one to also tally a multi-RBI game as she brought in the Terriers' first and fourth runs. Her first RBI came in the fourth inning off a double to left center that scored Havalynn Abernathy – a response to UNCG's two-run homer in the top half of the inning. Petty would then cap Wofford's three-run fifth inning with an RBI single to right center, which gave the team a 4-2 lead.

Petty's double in the fourth inning was her first extra-base hit since April 14 against Western Carolina and her fifth extra-base hit of the season. The first of
Wofford's other two runs were scored by Kate Platte, who came home off the bat of Hope Ingle's RBI single through the left side.

Ingle finished the game 2-for-3 with an RBI, marking her fourth multi-hit game of the conference slate and moved her into a tie for second in total multi-hit games this season (trails Platte by one such game).

The other run came on a double steal attempt, when UNCG attempted a designed trick throw to second base to entice the runner on third, in this case Lilly Compton, to attempt a steal home. Initially, UNCG's effort was successful before the home plate umpire ruled Compton safe because of the Spartan catcher blocking the plate.

For Compton the run scored is her ninth of the season, all of which have come in situations where she has entered the game as a courtesy runner.

Meanwhile, Abby Greenwood picked up her eighth win of the season in the circle, spinning a complete game with three runs allowed on five hits, two walks and three strikeouts. The freshman has now won three of her last four starts.

Game 2
Wofford bookended the second half of the doubleheader with a strong first and sixth inning to produce its largest margin of victory this season.

In the first inning, the Terriers took advantage of two UNCG errors to jump ahead 4-0 and gave the team to weather the Spartans' three-run, two homer fourth inning.

The sixth inning, however, saw Wofford draw four walks (three of which were drawn in the first four batters of the frame) and make three timely hits to score seven runs. Tied at five going into the bottom half of the sixth, pinch hitter Abby Gossett's walk brought in Ally Bigham to score the go ahead run. Subsequent hitters Gracie Parker and Hope Ingle tripled Wofford's lead with a RBI single and walk respectively.

The following hitter, Hannah Maddox, unloaded the bases with a 3-run RBI double to left center and gave the outfielder an impressive final line of 2-for-4, four RBIs and two runs scored. In addition to being the first collegiate multi-RBI game for Maddox, she now holds the title for the most single game RBIs by any Terrier this season.

An RBI groundout by Kalli Petty concluded Wofford's scoring for the afternoon.

Abby Greenwood once again picked up the win, this time appearing in relief for Margaret Axelson, who posted a stat line of 4.1 IP, 9 H, 5 R (all earned), 2 BB and 3 K.

Once in the game, Greenwood navigated the final 2.2 innings without allowing a single hit or walk.
As a team, Wofford's win in the second half of the doubleheader means Wofford can neither finish below .500 in the SoCon nor below .500 in its cumulative record.
