Spartanburg, SC – Wofford softball scored four runs in the opening frame but were unable to find another run in a 4-5 loss to UNCG, marking the end of the regular season for the Terriers.
The team jumped all over Spartan starter Tori Spell, turning three hits, a walk and hit by pitch into three runs before chasing her from the game.
Hannah Maddox followed up her four RBI performance in game two of the series with a bases clearing triple that brought in two runs and put Wofford ahead 2-0.
A standout performer across all three games, Maddox finished the series 3-for-11 with six RBIs, a double, triple, and three runs scored.
Kalli Petty brought in Maddox two batters later and then
Ally Bigham would score
Havalynn Abernathy to ultimately conclude scoring for the Terriers. Abernathy, who reached base via a hit by pitch, was hit by a pitch in all three games of the series and leads the team in the category with eight on the season – which also puts her in a tie for third in the conference for most times hit by a pitch.
Wofford would threaten again in the fourth inning, loading the bases with two outs, but was unable to capitalize with Petty grounding out to second to end the inning. The Terriers would fail to advance a runner to third base over the final three frames.
Tayven Stephenson started the game for the Terriers, lasting 2.1 innings and gave up three runs on four hits, walked two and struck out one, but would not factor into the decision. Neither would Wofford's next pitcher,
Margaret Axelson, who worked the next 1.2 innings and recorded three outs with her first three pitches before conceding the game-tying run on two hits.
The final pitcher of the afternoon for Wofford,
Abby Greenwood, would end up taking the loss after spinning three innings of one run softball. In addition to the one run allowed, she would concede three hits while striking out four.
The team is off until the Southern Conference tournament, which begins on Wednesday, May 8, in a single elimination game between the bottom four teams. The winner of those two games will join the top four teams in a double elimination bracket the following day until the winner is crowned on Saturday, May 11.
