Greensboro, NC – Wofford softball walked off ETSU 5-4 in the tenth inning for the program's first ever Southern Conference Tournament win before falling to Mercer 1-0 in walk-off fashion in the quarterfinals, thus earning a split on the tournament's opening day.
First Round
Margaret Axelson spun her sixth complete game of the season and the third of which extended into extra innings in earning her ninth win of the season. In her first appearance since being named First Team All-SoCon, the sophomore navigated the first four innings without incident (allowed one hit and stranded both runners that reached base).
It wasn't until the fifth inning that Axelson allowed a runner past first base when she conceded three runs on four hits. However, following that hiccup she settled back into that flow where the only two runners that advanced past first base were either placed on second (due to the international tie breaker taking effect in the tenth inning) or ended up getting tagged out trying to go from first base to third base (also in the tenth inning).
With a final line of 10.0 IP, 7 H, 4 R (3 ER), and 4 K, it marks the fifth time in her last seven starts that she has gone the distance and in doing so improved to 2-0 in her career against the Buccaneers.
Axelson's battery mate,
Hope Ingle, proved the offensive catalyst for Wofford's win – first sending a three-run homer over the left center wall in the third and then reached on a fielder's choice in the tenth to secure the win for the Terriers. She finished 1-for-4, HR, 4 RBI, BB, and a run scored.
Ingle's home run was her third on the campaign, which broke a tie with teammate
Kaytlin Greenwood for the team lead in the category. Already the team leader in RBIs, her four on the day increased her lead to now ten more runs batted in than the second place Terriers (
Megan Towery and
Kalli Petty with 14 each).
As a team Wofford improved to 4-0 in extra-inning games during the conference slate and has won five consecutive extra-inning games (last such loss came on March 5, against Presbyterian). The Terriers also improved their record against the Buccaneers to 3-1 all-time.
By winning in the first round, Wofford secured its spot in the quarterfinals and therefore advanced to the double elimination portion of the bracket.
Quarterfinals
Wofford retook the diamond in the third game of the day from Greensboro, North Carolina, this time taking on the Mercer Bears.
Starting pitcher
Abby Greenwood faced traffic in every inning but managed to avoid damage for the first six innings (stranded eight Mercer runners, six of which were stranded in scoring position).
Greenwood only conceded a run when she pitched around Mercer's Tori Hedgecock and Kassidy Moore, loading the bases for the Bears, who took advantage with a single up the middle to take the contest. Despite taking the loss, Greenwood has allowed one or fewer runs in five of her last six appearances.
Wofford's best opportunity came in the seventh inning as well, using a two-out double from
Ally Bigham to put herself in scoring position and then a single from
Kaytlin Greenwood that gave pinch runner
Lilly Compton the opportunity to score from second base. However, Mercer's right fielder was able to beat Compton with the throw and gun her down at the plate.
Up Next
The Terriers are off until Thursday, May 9, at 7 PM where they await the loser of UNCG and either Western Carolina or Samford. Wofford holds the season series over WCU and UNCG, taking two of three from each of them in Spartanburg earlier this season while dropping two of three to Samford, also in Spartanburg.
